A luxurious, beautifully furnished Lake District 18th Century retreat, just ½ mile from Coniston Water.
Charcoal House is built of thick stone walls with high windows, oak lintels and sunny balcony with stunning views over to the Coniston Fells.
Please note that we only rent our properties for the following options:-
1. Full week from a Monday or Friday.
2. 2 night weekend from a Friday or Saturday in low season.
3. 3 night weekend of Friday to Monday.
4. 4 night mid-week break of Monday to Friday.
The only exceptions to this are some bank holidays and from mid-July until 1st of September when we operate with a Saturday changeover.

The house has been tastefully and lovingly refurbished. Heritage Farrow & Ball colours, cosy log fires and plenty of period features - the epitome of country chic.
This lovely property now offers stylish self-catering accommodation for up to 8 people. The main house sleeps up to 6 in 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. For larger groups there is also the option of renting out The Nook (sleeps 2), an attractive, self-contained apartment on the ground floor of the building. The Nook is only available to guests renting Charcoal House and is not let separately.
The open plan kitchen/dining area with breakfast bar and dining table hasseating for 8. The spacious fully equipped kitchen has a twin oven Aga, microwave, dishwasher, large fridge freezer, crockery, glasses, cutlery, & utensils for 8 people.
The utility room next to the kitchen housing the washing machine, tumble drier, large fridge freezer and an additional sink.
The Snug are just off the dining are has a sofa and coffee table. This is a great area for grabbing some time out or a place for the kids.
The spacious beamed sitting room on the upper floor. There are sofas and comfy chairs for 8, a top of the range Samsung Smart TV and a cosy wood burner. The large feature balcony provides plenty of ‘wow factor’ – giving stunning views over the river and the Coniston fells to ‘The Old Man of Coniston’. Sit out on a summer evening and listen to the river flowing through the valley.
The main house has 3 elegant bedrooms; 2 with king sized beds and 1 with a ‘zip and link’ super king sized bed that can be unzipped to make twin beds. Each one has luxury Egyptian cotton bedlinen
2 bathrooms, 1 with a large walk-in shower and the 2nd with a roll top, claw foot, free standing bath.(There is a 3rd ensuite in The Nook).
For parties of 8, ‘The Nook’ ground floor apartment can be hired at an additional £50 per night. Sleeping 2, this fully self contained apartment consists of an open plan living area with sofa, chair, table, flat screen TV and a log fire. The kitchen is fully equipped and the bedroom has a king sized bed and ensuite bathroom with power shower.
Outside you will find a large enclosed south facing garden with summer house, BBQ and garden seating for 8. There is also off road parking for up to 4 cars and a secure garage within which guests can store canoes, bicycles etc..
Nestling in the tiny hamlet of Low Nibthwaite in the Crake Valley, the house is surrounded by woods, fells and spectacular scenery. There are plenty of walks straight from the door and Coniston Water is just 15 minute's walk.
If you love water sports – the lake is ideal for dinghy sailing, canoeing and kayaking. Coniston Water was famously featured in 'Swallows and Amazons' (filmed 1 mile away) and famed again with Donald Campbell's attempts at the world water speed record.
Those seeking a more restful way to explore the lake can take a leisure cruise on the steam yacht ‘Gondola’.
Tree top adventures and segways are available in Grizedale Forest – a 20 minute drive away.
Ruskin, Ransome, Campbell and Beatrix Potter are all famous names linked to this beautiful area of the South Lakes and there are many opportunities to discover more about these incredible people in the local museums.

The Nook - there is an additional charge of £50 per night if you want to rent the Nook.
Luxury Egyptian cotton bed linen and towels are included in the price along with central heating, electric, hot water and free Wi-Fi
