The Farmhouse sleeping up to 10 guests

The Farmhouse is one of the three lovely holiday homes on Burnville Farm, looking like it came from a child's picture book. It is big and old and stands on the edge of the traditional Devon farmyard. Leave your boots in the hall and head through to the comfy sitting room with its traditional beams, off which is a bright sun room for fine days. The kitchen is well equipped for preparing meals to enjoy around the big sociable table beside the open fire in the dining room, where fascinatingly the table is an ancient dough trough. The four comfortable bedrooms are all upstairs, peaceful places to sleep well after busy days exploring the area and enjoying the farm amenities. Outside, you will find your own big enclosed pretty garden with lawn, trees, stream and barbecue 20 yards from the house. Beyond this, there is as much freedom and fun as you could wish for. You are welcome to wander the 250 acre farm and help when possible, picnic beside the pond, swim in the shared seasonal outdoor swimming pool, play tennis and use the shared games room and gym. Maybe arrange with the friendly owners to try clay pigeon shooting and archery or hire mountain bikes and head out over the open moorland which surrounds the farm or on the Granite Way cycle trail (small extra charges may apply). This is brilliant walking country too, or if you have horses you can bring them and ride since stabling and grazing are available. Golf and gliding can be arranged nearby and Roadford Lake is excellent for water sports. With so many activities available, yet in such a peaceful spot, The Farmhouse is an ideal location for a fabulous family break.

Nestling among mature woodland on the western slopes of Dartmoor, the historic village of Lydford is a jewel in this area of outstanding scenic beauty. To the north, just half a mile away, the high tors come right down to the village edge, while to the south the River Lyd winds its way through Lydford Forest on its tumbling course northwards.

Four bedrooms upstairs: 1 x super king double, 1 x king size double (plus single bed by arrangement), 1 x single, 1 x room with two sets of bunks (one 2'6").

"The famer and his wife made us so welcome. The walks, the views, seeing the animals, the lovely gardens, it really was a fabulous holiday. Thank you."
    Mr Rashid – 1 May 2021
"Helped in every way possible. 5 stars"
    Mrs Holley – 1 Oct 2020
" The games room is a real bonus for a wet cold week in Devon! The only thing I would say didn’t meet expectation was the lack of an enclosed garden. For some the partial enclosed garden across the yard would be ok but we have one reactive dog so having the farm dogs (albeit friendly farm dogs) wondering around by the back door with no enclosed safe space was stressful. Mr Cunningham was very friendly (without being intrusive) and let us know which fields had cattle/sheep and which ones we were free to wonder so there was plenty of space just not enclosed garden which was disappointing. "
    Mr Keller – 1 Sep 2020
" Beautiful quiet location ideal for touring Devon and Cornwall. The owners were amazing and nothing was too much trouble. Definitely a place to book again for a perfect family holiday. "
    Mrs Newman – 1 Aug 2020
" A problem with the shower was resolved promptly by the owner with minimal disruption to our holiday. There was just one point I would like to make - the main description of the house does not make it clear that the pool is shared with other properties. Given the current covid situation a rota was in place for pool usage which allocated 1.5hours per day for its use to each property. Looking at the description of other properties on the farm, the shared nature of this facility is much clearer. I would highly recommend that the description is amended to bring "the Farmhouse" in line with "The Red barn" and "the Coach House". "
    Mrs Barradell – 1 Aug 2020
" Due to covid19 restrictions for tennis court you need your own racket and ball and need to book slot for pool use. House very comfortable and well equipped. Use of cottage garden for local produce was great. Owners always around to help with any problems. Will return. "
    Mrs Edwards – 1 Aug 2020
" Relaxed and rustic farmhouse with all amenities but the swimming pool and tennis court are a super bonus. Will definitely be putting the place on our list to stay at again when in Devon. "
    Mr Dyson – 1 Aug 2020
" Loved the open fire which the owners had prepared ready for our first night. We then had 3/4 further evenings using the leftover logs which was lovely. If you have a toddler I would recommend a stair gate or potentially looking elsewhere as there are many steps/stairs to navigate in the house, as well as a large glass coffee table. However we safely moved that into the side hallway which gave lots more room for games and play space for our daughter. We had no accidents with her, she loved the high chair and we were very pleased to see an actual cot rather than a travel cot which we were expecting. The beds were extremely comfortable and warm and all rooms and bathrooms were very clean! We took 3 dogs with us and they all loved their daily strolls around the farm. There is a garden area but something more enclosed for our (pampered) pooches would have been ideal. You really are on a working farm and it was great to see! We saw Sheep being weighed by the farmer from our window, had them all being herded past the house and could hear them and the cows each day. The farmer Tim was very friendly and gave us some tips on where to go. I would recommend visiting the Whitelady Waterfall a few mins down the road, it was raining when we went but well worth the visit! Local Donkey Sanctuary about 20 mins drive was also a lovely family trip out, as was the National Marine Aquarium at Plymouth- would highly recommend this too. We were unaware that the pool at the Farmhouse was shared (later saw this in the small print on the website) and due to current circumstances was limited to one 1.5hr slot per day which with the weather we could only do on one day and found this time slot to be too short. Lovely and clean though and the gardens are very pretty too. We all had a lovely time and it was a great place for us all to spend time together as a family, have cosy evenings and beautiful walks. The views from this place are absolutely stunning!! "
    Mr Dixon – 1 Jul 2020
" The games room, tennis court and swimming pool were brilliant additions to the house. The only criticism was that the wooden seating and parasol in the garden was covered in mould which meant we didn’t use it. Lovely setting with friendly hosts. Would absolutely recommend this as a holiday let. "

"We loved every minute! We didn't venture out much due to some pretty bad weather but there was lots of room to spread out and enjoy our time together indoors. I don't think there are any shops/pubs in an easily walkable distance so bring supplies and enjoy!"
    Mr Punter
"The farmhouse layout and facilities were superb. Having a huge open fire over Christmas was so homely and comforting. The whole extended family have praised us for their time away. The owners could also not have been nicer and were very attentive."
    Mr Spires
" Lovely walks, food and relaxing with the massive open fire. The games room was fun for all the family. Everything was well equipped and large enough for the 10 of us. The only downfall was the oven as when cooking for 10 it needs to work correctly. A great cottage and would recommend anytime! "

    Mrs Mcbride
"flowers put in every room and freshly cooked brownies waiting for you on arrival. The pool is excellent and the games room the kids loved!"
    Mr Thompson
" The kids loved the freedom and adventure on the farm and learned loads. Watching a calf being born was a highlight, as was bottle feeding some orphan lambs. The grounds are wonderful and lead to some fabulous walks, including down to Lydford Gorge which was well worth the £25 family ticket. The owners are lovely and always seemed happy to answer al the questions that the kids (and us adults) had to ask. "
    Mrs Loadwick
" I couldn't fault anything at all. The attention to detail always makes for a wonderful stay, tea and brownies set out for our arrival, fresh flowers around the farmhouse and a basket of fresh eggs given to us on our first morning - there were delicious!!! "

" We had the most fantastic holiday at the Farmhouse from start to finish. We stayed with another family and the children placed themselves firmly in the games room at every opportunity!, which gave the adults time to get sorted out. The house was lovely and clean & fully kitted out with everything you could wish for ( even hairdryer and straighteners!!). We loved the rural & cosy feel of the property and all enjoyed sitting around the large table in the evening playing board games. The heated swimming pool was of course the favourite place for the children but so nice that it was slightly away from the house so no sneaking out without the adults! Location wise perfect for us, (we organised an online shop to arrive the evening of our arrival which was great as no jumping in cars for bits and bobs), situated midway between north and south coasts, so many choices for great days out from horse riding on the moors in Mary Tavy to surfing in Newquay and of course exploring the surrounding countryside. I have no hesitation in recommending the Farmhouse... it was, to coin my sons phrase ' the best holiday ever!!' "

"Cannot be faulted. Will definitely be returning next year for another digital detox. Highly recommended."
    - Mrs Dean, September 2018
"It was a wonderful week and would definitely reurn some day. Highly recomended."
    - Mr Hobbs, September 2018
"Fabulous property and amazing hosts. Cannot be faulted."
    - Mr Mulhern, July 2018
"This was a fantastic holiday from start to finish and was thoroughly enjoyed by adults and children alike. Great facilities and staff really helpful and kind. Outdoor pool, tennis court and games room particularly enjoyed and I’d definitely recommend to families whatever the age of children. Endless activities, walking and other attractions nearby. One week not long enough for us! Only issue was sat nav taking us to another farm with difficult road so would call once in area to clarify directions. A wonderful place."
    - Mrs Greene, August 2018
"The holiday was great and the Farmhouse met the needs of all 10 of us with plenty to do across the farm."
    - Mrs Brown, March 2018
"The owners are very friendly and welcoming."
    - Mr Tregellas, April 2018
"The farmhouse is spacious and well-equipped and comfortably furnished in a traditional style. A winning feature is the enormous open fireplace in the dining room, in which a fire had been made up before our arrival. Additional logs are available for purchase. The dining room is dark and cosy and a good place to hunker down when Dartmoor's notorious rain or fog sets in. The light-filled conservatory is a wonderful place to have breakfast and is stocked with huge numbers of board games. The small gym in a converted barn opposite the house has a few good-quality machines, there is also an indoor games room which we didn't use. It is possible to walk from the farm direct (through a few fields and over a few stiles) onto the moor - on Tim's recommendation we walked via Gibbets Hill and Wheal Betsy to the excellent Elephant's Nest pub at Horndon and back via Mary Tavy. There is plenty to do and see in the vicinity: the charming village of Lydford with the famous Lydford Gorge walk practically within walking distance from the farm, the elegant UNESCO-listed market town of Tavistock about 20 minutes' drive away, large National Trust properties with extensive grounds at Cotehele and Buckland Abbey, and the scenic Tamar Valley Railway offering a picturesque alternative way of travelling into the great port city of Plymouth from the railhead at Gunnislake. A short drive takes you to the many attractive sites on the moor: the stone rows and circles at Merrivale were particularly atmostpheric on a damp and windy Dartmoor day. Overall a very enjoyable visit!"
    - Mrs Straesser, April 2018
"We had a lovely week at the Farmhouse, you can walk right up to the Moors or plan a visit to the coast. We visited the Bedruthan steps, very beautifull!!"

"A great base for a holiday on Dartmoor - we’ve been staying in the Farmhouse on this lovely working farm for many years. The owners are very friendly and welcoming."

".. only negative was the room with the bunk beds in smelt like urine ... one of the beds was damp and I think a child staying previously had wet the bed .... it was also a struggle to sleep 8 Adults we took an air bed as we were aware of the bed situation and was glad we did because of the damp bed .... I would say it sleeps four adults and four to five children comfortably..."

" Beautiful farmhouse with log fire, slate floors and a lovely large dining area with exposed beams. Our children loved the freedom that being on a farm gave and really enjoyed the games room and swimming pool. The farmer and his wife were tremendously helpful and offered advice on where to go and what to see. A short drive to Lydford Gorge, a walk in the Moors, or pony trekking at Mary Tavy. Bude Beach and Dawlish Beach about an hours drive. A couple of pubs also a short drive away. No local shops and no wifi! - Loved a week without the internet though:) "

" For a quiet family holiday it is definitely 10/10. The farmhouse is fantastic, so roomy and well set out, lovely family breakfasts at the table and dinners too! I love this area, have been coming back since I was a child, then returned with my sons for holidays and this year we were joined by my grandson. Lydford is a family favourite, wonderful meals at the Castle Inn, memories of Lydford Castle, more family photos, and a wonderful cherry cake from the Church. The younger members went to the Gorge and we all went to Dartmeet Adventure Park, more to do every year. We also went to Dingle Fairground, very good fun, full of memories and a great place for lunch. Back at the farm the swimming pool was great, the games room and gym used every day and the tennis courts were great and well used. Lovely to see all the farm animals, chickens in the garden and sheep running past the farmhouse, lovely. Back to reality now but I am sure we will go back. :-) "
