About this property

Ambleside 1 mile. An outstanding, ground floor, semi-detached courtyard cottage in the desirable hamlet of Clappersgate, just one mile from Ambleside in the heart of the Lakes. Located in the Lake District National Park, just 200 yards from the River Brathay and Lake Windermere, The Old Laundry is the perfect place to stay for a magical holiday amidst simply beautiful scenery. This superb cottage provides excellent accommodation, perfect for a relaxing break in an area surrounded by fells, lakes, rivers and wildlife with great local pubs, shops and restaurants within 15 minutes’ walk. Inside, there is a spacious open plan living area with a feature slate inglenook with gas fire, contemporary kitchen with breakfast bar and soft, comfortable seating. This cottage is so charming you might not want to leave! Both bedrooms are elegantly furnished and each has an en-suite wet-room with underfloor heating. Outside, across the cobbled courtyard and road, there is an idyllic shared garden on the banks of the River Brathay, which flows into Lake Windermere – a perfect place to enjoy a glass of wine and escape from the hustle and bustle. Every guest should take the path up Loughrigg Fell behind the cottage for the views over Ambleside to Wansfell, Lake Windermere, Rydal Water and Grasmere which will stay with you long after you have left this magical place. The quaint village of Hawkshead is just 10 minutes’ drive away, a real favourite for the lovers of Beatrix Potter with the Beatrix Potter Gallery to visit and of course, Hill Top at Near Sawrey. Whilst you are over this way, explore the Grizedale Forest and the many treks and cycleways – this vast forest is a haven for wildlife. On the way back why not stop off at the Drunken Duck Inn to enjoy a refreshing drink – dinner here is superb, but booking is essential! Whether this is your first visit or one of many to Ambleside, The Old Laundry will be your favourite holiday home.

Given its excellent position at the northern tip of Lake Windermere - England's largest lake - Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes. The town itself is famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th Century 'Bridge House' - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District.

Fantastic stay in the cottage, despite getting caught in a snow storm. The cottage itself is on one floor but is large with two decent sized double bedroom each with their own bathroom, I particularly liked the heated flooring in the bathrooms. Facilities Great and well equipped. Location is great as is only a short walk into Ambleside and all the pubs and cafes. Will certainly be back again, wouldn’t stay anywhere else now if visiting Ambleside.

However, upon arrival the cottage was not as clean as I would expect in this day and age. Clearly the previous guests had a dog ( and would have been charged extra, usually £30 for what the holiday letting company call extra cleaning !!! ) the sofa, cushions and rug were full of dog hair, the glass on the front door full of dirty muddy marks. We also found a pair of walking socks behind the radiator covered in dog hairs/cobwebs. If you looked up every corner of the cottage had a spider residing in it. The place just did not feel clean. The 1st bedroom had 1 toilet roll and the second had just 8 sheets left on an old roll it also had no hand-wash, no kitchen towel and once the kitchen bin was full we had to go and buy more bin liners because there were none in the cottage. If this was a cheap holiday cottage then I may expect to have to ruff it a bit but this was almost £1,500 originally and we booked it when it was reduced, but we still paid £1,000 for the week. Am I expecting too much? Would I stay there again, probably but only if the other 2 cottages were booked up. Somewhat disappointed.

Beds were comfortable and cosy. Interior room temperature was perfect. Kitchen had all necessary amenities for breakfast and light cooking that we did. The only minor suggestions are - (1) perhaps consider keeping some medium sized bowls in the kitchen for soups and cereals and (2) the overhead shower in the 2nd en-suite bathroom would benefit from clearing the limescale on the shower head. Other than these rest of it was perfect with regards to stay and location for various local attractions and activities. Even our dog loved it.
