Superb Craster Cottage sleeping up to 6 guests

Only 4 miles from Embleton Bay, with its sweeping sands and romantic bay, this former blacksmiths is set in the small hamlet of Rock. Dating back to 1888, it offers a contemporary and welcoming central base for families, friends and couples. Standing detached, it has a roomy interior and a spacious, enclosed garden which makes this is a great property for all age groups. Craster is only 5 miles, famous for its smoked kippers which can be bought at the fresh fish shop, still situated beside the harbour. Alnwick, with its cobbled streets, is 5½ miles, and is famous for its castle featured in the Harry Potter films and the ‘Downton Abbey’ TV series. The property is ideally located for travelling inland to the National Park, west to visit Hadrian’s Wall or north towards the Borders and Scotland. S49959 makes a great base for exploring the whole of this very friendly and unspoilt county. Shop 3 miles, pub and restaurant 1 mile.

"Well appointed cottage with everything you require. Provided slippers a nice touch. Rear garden is enclosed and a good size for dogs. All bedrooms are a good size with king size or above beds. Some of the glasses had been put away dirty (been used and full of lipstick) and required washing before use but this is the fault of the inconsiderate previous guests and not the owners.Good location for exploring the NE and whilst the cottage is located on a main road through the village and at the end of a small estate, the village is very quiet and we were not disturbed. Would visit this cottage again which speaks volumes."

"Situated in corner of small rural housing development - found location good and some lovely walks around Rock estate too, stunning night sky on a clear night. There is a pub about 2miles away and a farm cafe the other way, otherwise Alnwick(lovely) is your nearest about 10mins drive which has all the amenities you could want.I liked the location and that is what would make me return. Just a couple miles of A1 and beaches another few miles away.Property was very nice and comfy and warm. Good beds and lovely enclosed garden. If I have negatives has to be some of the kitchen things need replacing ie oven tray etc, I kept my bread in a carrier bag for a week - no bread bin. Also the TV is a wee small for such a large and lofty lounge, think a newer model needed and the old one would go well in the space made for a tv in main bedroom, even has an ariel cable? Wifi is good but not to far away from hub, good speeds so ideal for Netflix...if they had a smart tv."

"Excellent accommodation, we had a lovely week, weather was kind, having not visited Northumberland before, we found it to be a stunningly beautiful part of the country. Amazing beaches. We have no complaints and will return."
Alison – 21 Sep 2018
"We found the cottage needed a thorough clean eg skirting boards etc. Beautiful cottage but found the shutters make the whole cottage seem too dark"
Jemma – 14 Sep 2018
"Beautiful place to stay. We really enjoyed our stay! Northumberland is gorgeous.. so many beaches and things to do. The house is amazing and is like home from home.. very comfortable and modern but with warmth and character"
Mark – 31 Aug 2018
"This is a lovely spacious cottage in a very quiet location, yet there are many places to visit within a 15 minute drive. Although this is rated as a 4* property on the website, it really could be a 5*."
Julie – 10 Aug 2018
"A beautiful cottage set in a stunning location. The cottage is spacious and homely. Staying in Rock gives you the feel of being ‘in the middle of nowhere’ whilst being only 10 minutes drive from the beaches, supermarket and town. We loved it!"
Barry – 3 Aug 2018
"It was the best family holiday ever!"
Jo – 27 Jul 2018
"A few niggles have caused me to give lower scores. Having stayed in many different UK holiday cottages this was the first to not even have put a pint of milk in the fridge for our arrival. Instead there were probably 20 long life mini pots of milk that I immediately threw away as they were almost a year out of date. Some of the kitchen equipment needed replacing - baking tins etc. The dustbin was completely full when we arrived - clearer instructions need to be displayed in the kitchen so that guests know where & when the bins need to be put out for collection. This is a lovely holiday property which just needs a little bit more attention to the detail."

"Blacksmiths is a lovely cottage decorated and furnished to a high standard. It is comfortable with plenty of room for 4 people although it would sleep 6. The dining area would be more cramped with 6. The kitchen appliances are also of a high standard. However, I would suggest adding some serving dishes, microwaveable cooking dishes and a few more saucepans, especially if catering for 6 people. We had a problem with the heat alarm in the kitchen, which went off about every 15 minutes for no reason on or second evening in the cottage. We had to disable it. I called the emergency number and we had a very quick response. The man who came replaced the battery and asked us to let him know if it didn't resolve the issue. It resolved the problem for two days before it started again. Having rung the cottages office, and electrician came out very quickly and replaced the faulty item. Thank you for dealing with it efficiently. The bathrooms/ensuites are fitted to a high standard as are the bedrooms. The main downside for us was the location. Although the cottage is in a rural, peaceful and central location, it is still a 20 minute plus journey to the main attractions. There are no footpaths from the cottage and no amenities with walking distance. The pub is shown in the information as being under a mile. It is in fact 1.2 miles. This in itself is well within walking distance, but the walk is down a narrow road so particularly pleasant and not suitable for evenings. Having said that, we had a lovely time in S49959 and we would go there again."

"When your 2 1/2 year old grandson walks in and says ‘wow’ then what more can be said? Location is excellent just need to go out as there is nothing immediately in Rock itself. And I really wouldn’t like to have to try and dust all of those shutters every week either! A fab place and plans are afoot to book again next year - just need to synchronise those diaries and we’ll be there. Thank you for a wonderful stay."
sara – 11 May 2018
"Loved our weeks stay, very comfortable. Our only suggestion would be an addition of a radio but overall very pleased with our vacation."
Amanda – 4 May 2018
"We love Rock and this is the 4th home we have stayed in here. Very comfortable and very clean. The garden was great and the living beautiful. We enjoyed the log burning stove at night. Wi-Fi worked great. The towels and bedding were not up to the standard of the rest of the home, but clean and usable. Would definitely go again."
Lyndsey – 27 Apr 2018
"Fantastic place to stay! Very spacious and well kept. We had lovely weather so we enjoyed the garden and the views. Nice walks from the house. Would love to stay again!"
Laura – 13 Apr 2018
"Excellent cottage in an excellent location.Great family memories made.Thank you!"
Rachel – 29 Dec 2017
"We had a lovely Christmas break at S49959 cottage and the house itself was fantastic. Although there are no pubs in the village there is one a short walk away which is worth a visit as everyone was really friendly. The house is situated quite close to a few other houses (just off a small culdesac) but was still quiet and this shouldn't put you off. the cottage was clean, well furnished, and probably a little bigger than the pictures show it to be. It was also very warm - might be worth leaving some instructions for the central heating / underfloor heating. I'll hopefully be visiting again soon."
Dorothy – 17 Nov 2017
"It is a beautiful cottage, which is well appointed. However having stayed at similar cottages in similar price brackets all had more by way of extras. This cottage had liquid soaps in all bathrooms...all practically empty, as were toilet rolls, washing up liquids and dish washer tablets!! Reed deffusers all around cottage, again all empty, and had been for some considerable time. There were no store cupboard items, and towels a bit tired!! Also the supply of logs for the log burner, barely lasted one evening!! The lack of such items detracts from the overall enjoyment of a lovely cottage."
Judy – 13 Oct 2017
"A lovely holiday home for the likes of us who want peace and tranquility.Lighting in the sitting room could be better.....heating still at time unfathomable to understand controls and at times not warm enough also noisy boiler. The beds were not as comfortable as last year and bedding a little tired."
Joanne – 29 Sep 2017
"A really well equipped cottage which was warm when we arrived and was obviously well kept. Its is placed in an area that is very quiet but not far to travel for things to do and see.As a family we really enjoyed our stay and would gladly return in the future."
John – 8 Sep 2017
"This is a well appointed cottage in lovely location that is good value for money. You need to be prepared to travel by car or public transport to local amenities such as shops, restaurants and pubs. It does however have some lovely walks on the doorstep."
Jonathan – 28 Jul 2017
"We had a nice break; weather wasn't great but that can't be helped. It did though highlight where we felt the cottage was lacking. In most places we have stayed in a similar price / quality bracket there has been a selection of movies, board games and jigsaw puzzles - with poor weather outside and limited options for TV these would have been much welcomed."
Ian – 7 Jul 2017
"Great time was had by all and the perfect holiday home was a major factor"
FLETCHER – 23 Jun 2017
"Had a really good week at S49959.We came fully prepared which was ok because it is some distance to nearest shop and if you plan on doing some cooking then you need to bring essentials with you. There are some nice walks around the property and although there are other properties in proximity it was very quiet.Pubs, restaurants and shops are not close by"
Jane – 9 Jun 2017
"S49959 certainly had the wow factor, the place was beautiful and the location perfect.Even the weather was good!"
Lel – 19 May 2017
"Superb cottage in a quiet location but easy to get to A1 for Alnwick, Holy Island etc and not far from Seahouses, Craster and some beautiful Northumbrian beaches. Ideal for the family and the dog! We will certainly return to Blacksmith's."
Julie – 28 Apr 2017
"This accommodation is beautifully presented and well equipped. Although there are no local amenities we didn't expect any and there is a pub a mile down the road which was very welcoming and served evening meals. Alnwick is 5/6 miles from S49959 Cottage and has a Morrisons, Sainsbury's and Aldi. The location of the accommodation is ideal for visiting the towns and villages along the coastal route and we would definitely stay there again. The only downside is the bed in the attic room which was slightly uncomfortable and the quality of the quilts (although the quilts would be perfectly adequate in the summer). However, we were more than happy with the accommodation which the owners have furnished to a very high standard and cannot praise it enough."
Ann – 14 Apr 2017
"We had a fab time at S49959 my only complaint is the upstairs bedroom could do with a better quality mattress"
Jan – 7 Apr 2017
"The cottage and its facilities are fantastic. The décor and furniture are modern but manage to create a very cosy atmosphere, especially with the wood burner blazing. The garden is enclosed and safe for children and dogs. The location is perfect for a selection of beaches and places to visit only a few miles away which means you wont spend your holiday in traffic queues."
Anthony – 10 Mar 2017
"Clean, comfortable (awesome beds), spacious and fantastic location for coastal walks and short drive to many country pubs and of course Alnwick where you can stock up on amenities. Nicely decorated but requires more table/floor lamps in lounge, lightening very poor. Multiple light bulbs throughout cottage required replacing and no replacements for the ones missing!Nice garden and views of sea/countryside. Good to see wifi is installed! Cottage facilities needs improving, as kitchen is poorly equipped and has very basic tools! If six occupying then dishwasher will be on non stop! More glasses/cutlery etc required.Nice to have log burner, but would be an idea to provide sufficient logs without having to go out and source some!"
Liz – 17 Feb 2017
"Beautiful spacious holiday cottage. Set in a very quiet location but not far from Alnwick and local villages. Master bedroom and en suite cold compared to rest of the barn which was cosy. Could have done with some kindling and newspaper to get the fire started. No wifi which you almost expect these days. Well equipped and plenty of space."
Lisa
"Lovely accommodation and great setting - WiFi issue for teenage children was only concern - will not hesitate to book again, highly recommended and look forward to coming back."
Amanda
"The cottage was just perfect for our stay. Rock is a tiny little village in the middle of the beautiful Northumberland countryside, but only a 10-20 min drive gets you to wonderful castles and beaches. So the location was just what we wanted. The view from the garden was beautiful and a great space for the dog and kids to run around. Inside the cottage feels spacious and comfortable in a clean and modern way. Once the log burner was going the good sized lounge was toasty and warm. Bedrooms and bathrooms were comfortable and clean. There were no logs on arrival and a few light bulbs had gone but these were minor things - overall we give this place a big thumbs up and will recommend it to family and friends."

"This is a lovely modern cottage in a lovely hamlet. Comfortable and easy to manage. Great beds with good bedding....oil heating a bit difficult to manage........but a very good place to stay.....we would recommend it highly."
David
"We had a lovely holiday in this beautiful cottage which was immaculately presented and close to many places to visit particularly the beautiful coast and castles. Thanks"
Alisdair
"A really enjoyable stay - very impressed with the cottage - well equipped and comfortable - a real home from home. Great view from the garden and we were very lucky with the weather to be able to dine outside several times. Great location to act as a base whether to explore the fabulous Northumberland coast or to strike out inland. Only thing that would improve the cottage for us would be access to wifi - though understand that some want to escape this!!"
Nicola
"A fantastic cottage in a good location. Couldn't fault anything about S49959, it is stunning! Great garden and views too, lovely peaceful location."
Geoff
"Excellent accommodation in good location but it does need wi-fi."
Robert
"S49959 is a very nice, new, clean property in a quiet village in the middle of countryside. Facilities are very good (the only things lacking were a garden parasol and a mirror in one of the bathrooms). Nice big lounge and kitchen, well appointed. Comfortable beds. Close to the coast, to Alnwick, and to lots of places to visit."
Richardson
"Absolutely beautiful property, very spacious and clean. All mod cons.Very tastefully decorated.Had a wonderful time. Would definitely stay again.Only thing missing is wifi."
Sandra
"The cottage is gorgeous and lovely views. Would be good if had WiFi and TV in bedrooms but apart from that was great. Not great phone signal"
Carolyn
"The property has been furnished, decorated and equipped to a very high standard. it is roomy and stylish for up to 6 people with all 3 bedrooms having en-suite facilities (ground floor bedroom has bathroom just next door). The upstairs double room with en-suite shower room is lovely but watch out if you are tall as the slope of the roof is low. Ground and lower ground (just 6 steps down from ground level) cab both be set up as large doubles or twin beds so very flexible. Kitchen is great and very nice touch to have a bottle of wine, biscuits and a starter supply of tea coffee sugar, salt and pepper and vinegar...even small milk cartons in the fridge for those first few drinks after arrival. The property is obviously only recently used for rentals as everything is brand new and spotless. Hope all future visitors keep it that way. There is washing machines, dishwasher etc. everything you could need...except a teapot! so tea drinker take one with you. Would have appreciated a book of information about heating etc. (there was a note saying being prepared but perhaps should have been ready for first residents). We had one problem - we set off the smoke alarm (cheese on toast under grill ) and it was absolutely deafening and we had no idea how to turn it off....fortunately after the smoke had died down a bit it went off - but it was terrifying. The smoke detector is positioned just in front of the cooker so this may be a regular problem for visitors with an unfamiliar cooker/grill etc. The garden is beautiful too, lovely to have a nice table and chairs to sit out looking across the fields. A little tricky to find the property but if you read the instructions word for word you will be OK, the driveway to the property isn't obvious. it is pretty remote but only a few minutes off the A1 for Alnwick, Berwick, Lindisfarne etc. and loads of country lanes to Craster, Embleton, Seahouses etc. The weather was very kind to us and we had a lovely stay with elderly parents who were very comfortable. Thanks."
