Bodwen sleeping up to 14 guests

Set within a 9-acre estate, this holiday property is ideal for exploring the many attractions the Isle of Wight has to offer.
Situated along a private road, this Victorian home was formerly the summer residence of the Countess Cowley, a member of Queen Victoria’s entourage. Located to maximise the sea views it is set within a beautiful 9-acre estate surrounded by woodland and the coast. Here you can enjoy the peaceful surroundings - and you may even spot one of the infamous red squirrels. Bodwen has been designed with large families and groups in mind with carefully co-ordinated interiors and contemporary furnishings. The property also had the added bonus of an outdoor tap, perfect for washing off walking boots and bikes.
Just 4 miles away is the seaside town of Ryde with its good selection of individual shops, restaurants, bars, tea shops and large sandy beach. There is also an abundance of attractions to visit which include the Isle of Wight steam railway and Museum of Havenstreet, 3¼ miles. Osborne House, which was a former royal residence that was built for Queen Victoria and Prince Albert as a summer home and rural retreat, 4¾ miles. Robin Hill Country Park offers exciting rides and adventure play all set in beautiful rolling down land and forest, 4½ miles. Also worth a visit is Amazon World, an educational and conservation centre offering over 200 animal species and rain forest plants, 7½ miles. Calbourne Water Mill, 11 miles, the only working water mill on the Isle of Wight and also features a small war museum, rural exhibits and a café. The island is also a walker’s paradise, filled with over 500 miles of footpaths across contrasting landscapes and beaches. Outdoor pursuits include walking, cycling, riding, sailing and fishing. Ken – 2 Jun 2018
"Fantastic venue for a big get together for a special occasion and/or holiday. Hardly a cottage!, a mansion with facilities to match. The photos on the website are brilliant, but cannot and do not do Bodwen justice. We arrived in wonderful weather, which helps of course, but it is a lovely house and grounds beautifully and lovingly maintained. Our party of eight adults and two small children, six and three, all loved it. Almost all of us were new to the Isle so we explored but you could easily just spend your time enjoying the splendid facilities on offer and the extensive gardens. The hosts are warm and generous and attentive. I have run out of superlatives!"

"Very spacious comfortable well equipped house for a large group. Great location for walks and enjoying wildlife on the doorstep especially the red squirrels - an unexpected privilege to be able to see them so close up. The owners were very hospitable and friendly and on hand if we needed anything. One of the best houses we have ever stayed in."

"It's hard to say what the best thing about Bowden is: braving the wind to stand on the private beach at midnight on Christmas Eve; cooking Christmas dinner with red squirrels feeding outside the window; sitting in the conservatory watching the sky get dark across the beautiful grounds; running your hands over the banisters, lovingly restored with 24 coats of varnish; chatting to Peter the owner over coffee; piling into the living room with wine, cake and board games... The house is historic, majestic, magical and beautifully crafted, with space for a large extended family group to eat together and play together, or to spread out over several rooms for a variety of activities. A minor drawback is the disparity between the sweeping grandeur of the first floor and the servants quarters on the second floor: bedroom and bathroom arrangements need some negotiation to keep all group members happy! It was a privilege to be the first guests for Christmas 2017 and to feel that we honoured Peter's vision of bringing his beloved family home back to life for a new chapter in the house's history."
