An excellent spacious modern house that's ideal for big family get togethers - we spent Christmas here and really appreciated the thoughtful tree and decorations and also the lovely housekeeper Katie who was very helpful in the lead up. The open plan layout is great and the views and location stunning. A few niggles with the property, however. The fridge is very small for a property sleeping 8, not helped by the fact that the shelves are missing from the inside door - so nowhere to keep bottles or cartons upright. This was a real issue over Christmas. We had been told there would be enough logs 'for the duration of your stay' but there were barely enough for two fires and we were unable to get more for a few days because places were shut over Christmas. This was disappointing. If we had known, we would brought our own. The underfloor heating system is very complicated and there are no proper instructions in the guest info book. Again others have pointed this out in their reviews, so why have Rural Retreats or the owners not acted on the feedback? The hot water ran out quickly and we had to spend a fair bit of time working out how to boost the immersion heater. This should be basic information provided - no-one wants to spend their holiday fiddlying with thermostats etc. The bedrooms were spotless but very plain and 'Ikea-basic' - not very cosy in winter. At this premium price a few more soft furnishings and pictures would have been appreciated and as many others have pointed out, there is no hanging space for clothes in any of the bedrooms. The house was immaculately clean and full marks to Katie for this.

House was very clean. Plenty of room with areas to sit and read, have dinner, play board games. Bedrooms were very spacious, having two en-suites, a bathroom and a downstairs toilet was a luxury. In the downstairs toilet a member of our party got locked in as the lock popped out, fortunately there was one of us to help out. Lovely garden with amazing views but the garden was not totally secure as there was no gate at the top of the driveway. Local pub was amazing, great food, very nice staff and dog friendly. Walks from the cottage were great but hilly walking back up. Excellent bus service to Whitby, excellent train service to Whitby, sleights, Grosmont and Goathland.
