The town of Downpatrick in Irish means ‘Partick’s stronghold’ and takes its name as it is said that Ireland’s patron saint, St Patrick, lived in and is now buried within the Cathedral. St Patrick’s legacy is still strong today, with the town centre hosting a St Patrick’s Visitor Centre, featuring displays and information about his life. Other locations to visit around Downpatrick include the ruins of Inch Abbey, located just under a mile away from the property, the Downpatrick and County Down railway, Quoile Castle and Ballynoe Stone Circle. The town also has a sporting heritage, with Downpatrick Racecourse having hosted race meetings since 1685. There are regular meetings throughout the year, including the two-day festival in June and Ladies Day in August. Downpatrick also hosts the renowned Downpatrick Parkland Golf Club, while other courses of note include Ardglass Golf Club which is located eight miles away, while Crossgar Golf Club is five miles to the north.
