The Great Lodging Red House sleeping up to 6 guests

Dating back to the 1500’s, this characterful property offers fantastic accommodation for those who love to be near the seaside.
    An ideal touring base
Beach 200 yards. The Great Lodging is located in the heart of the seaside village of Anstruther, or Anster, as it’s known locally. The Great Lodging, known as ‘Fernbank’ for many years until the current owners revived the original name in 1993, consisted of four separate dwellings dating back to the 1500s. In 1643 it was owned by the Borthwick family who owned many estates nearby. In 1752 it was passed to George Dishington, who is strongly believed to be a descendant of Robert the Bruce, King of Scots. Dishington went on to buy the other properties that now form The Great Lodging. His descendants lived in the property until 1885 when it was owned by John Melville-Keay, captain of ‘Ariel’, a China tea clipper ship which almost won The Great Tea Race of 1866. The most famous of all tea clipper ships has to be the ‘Cutty Sark’ whose captain, George Moodie, was born in Fife.
The aptly named Great Lodging Red House (ref 29785) provides accommodation spanning three floors. It is tastefully furnished throughout with antique and period furniture. Spiral stairs wind through the house to the living/dining room, then up to the bedrooms. After catching your breath and admiring the view from the double bedroom, continue to the top floor from where you will be rewarded with wonderful views over the Firth of Forth and a spacious second living room spanning the whole of the second floor.
Garden Flat (ref 29784) forms part of the owner’s home and offers a real home from home atmosphere and makes a perfect retreat for 2 guests. It is furnished with period furniture and antique rugs and retains many original features including an inviting open fire in the living room and quarry tiled floors. The living and dining room also have quaint window seats which look onto the private, south-facing patio – a real sun trap on summer days.
Guests are welcome to wander in the well-tended garden of the main house, shared with the owners - the perfect place to relax after a day exploring the area. Both properties can be booked together for up to 8 guests. Ideal for friends or two families who wish to holiday together, but also have some privacy.
This picturesque corner of Fife, known as East Neuk, has many visitor attractions including many championship golf courses and is only 9 miles from St Andrews. Enjoy leisurely walks on the beach just 200 yards walk and treat yourself to fish and chips from an award-winning restaurant on the seafront. If you wish to venture further afield then the bustling city of Dundee can be reached in 30 minutes, and Perth and Edinburgh within an hours’ drive. Shops, restaurants and bars are all within a few hundred yards of your front door.

    Sally – 9 May 2018
"A wonderful quirky but very comfortable and well-equipped historical house in the centre of Anstruther. The Red House has loads of charm but also comfortable beds, a great power shower! Beautiful sea views from the top floor sitting room (there are 3 reception rooms). Access to a lovely garden. The sea/beach is just a few metres walk away. The owners live next door and are very welcoming and helpful. We had a wonderful stay here with my parents and young children aged 6 & 4. We would all highly recommend the Red House and Anstruther."
