Kate's Croft sleeping up to 7 guests

Come and explore the Northern Highlands with its long sandy beaches, lochs and mountains, ideal for guests who enjoy outdoor activities.
Kate’s Croft is a traditional detached stone cottage and barn conversion. Perched on a hillside overlooking the Moray Firth, it enjoys superb uninterrupted views across the Sutherland hills to the sea. Originally Kate’s Croft comprised a small, two-roomed croft house and barn. The cottage has been renovated by the current owner and now provides delightful accommodation that oozes rustic charm in a quiet and peaceful setting. It is situated on a small no-through lane that leads directly onto the open hillside. Just 1½ miles from the A9 and the renowned North Coast 500 route, it is easily accessible too. Wildlife is abundant in the immediate area and deer, golden eagles, otters, dolphins and seals are seen locally. The large kitchen/dining room in the converted barn area is simply stunning. With a farmhouse kitchen table, wood burner and bright, contemporary kitchen units with large range cooker, it makes a wonderful hub for the whole family to gather around. It is also extremely well-equipped. There are two separate living rooms, one with a large wood-burner, making this an ideal cottage for a two-family holiday or larger groups. The main bedroom is accessed via its own separate staircase. Located in the old hay loft and built into the hillside, the owner has cleverly added French doors which open onto a decking area with patio table and chairs where you can enjoy the morning sun, or if you are lucky, an amazing view of the Northern Lights. At the other end of the cottage a second staircase leads up to another double bedroom, a twin room and a single room. All enjoy the same wonderful sea views. There is a small enclosed garden with a picnic bench. From here, steps lead up to a small decked area behind the house which can also be accessed from the master bedroom.
Situated in the pretty hamlet of Gartymore, it is just over a mile to the attractive coastal fishing village of Helmsdale. Here there is a thriving small harbour and a good selection of small local shops and restaurants as well as a fascinating, award-winning museum detailing the area’s rich and varied past. There is a 9-hole golf course in the village and other championship golf courses at nearby Brora and Dornoch. The local shoreline is renowned for its fossils, which are regularly found along this particular stretch of coast. This region is also known for its unspoilt beaches, wild and rugged coastline, and traditional villages. Travel north to visit the Castle of Mey, John O’ Groats and the Orkney Isles. Golf, fishing, cycling, hill-walking, surfing, kayaking and pony trekking are all local pastimes. Beach 1 mile. Shop, pub and restaurant 1¾ mile.

"We always appreciate cottages that allow us to take dogs, it means we can all go on holiday together. There were two things that didn’t quite meet our expectations. 1) cleanliness wasn’t quite what we’d hope for. 2) the sofas were all clearly very old and extremely uncomfortable. But there were a lot of positives. The kitchen was very well equipped, the bedrooms were lovely, we loved the en-suite one with the balcony. The garden is enclosed, if you are taking your furry friends and the cottage was very warm and welcoming."

"Lovely spacious cottage with cosy wood burners. Would stay again."

"Lovely cottage and area. Would recommend."
    Joan – 29 Sep 2018
"Loved this cottage if ever back that way again would definitely stay there . Spotlessly clean lots of toys and games if you have children . Plenty wildlife we had deer walking past in mornings . Fabulous place."
    Lyn – 29 Jul 2018
"The cottage was ideal for our family of 4. It is a good location to see the North East of Scotland. The rooms have limited head room which was a problem for my husband, but this is not really an issue if you are only staying for a holiday. The house was welcoming and well decorated - it would be good to come back in the winter to use the wood stoves! There was lots of communal space and the kitchen was well stocked. All in all a good holiday."

"Thank you for the flowers and milk – a lovely gesture on arrival.Whilst we had a perfectly pleasant stay, please see below some feedback for you:The kettle spills every time it is poured. The double bed above the kitchen is supremely uncomfortable and we had to leave a day early as my back couldn’t hold up any longer. All the combe ceilings are terribly low – we all repeatedly banged our heads and made standing up upstairs almost impossible. There was no hanging space in the bedroom above the kitchen. The heating was erratic – either too hot or too cold. All sofas were extremely uncomfortable – the green one groaned every time it was used! The sitting rooms were packed with ‘stuff’ and felt very dark, damp and unwelcoming. The lighting in the sitting rooms was terrible – it made reading almost impossible. The bedside lamps in the bedroom could really do to be bigger or have brighter bulbs in them. The kitchen tap constantly dripped. The ensuite hot tap did not run or produced a mere trickle of water. The lawn and patio area were both full of weeks and needed some attention. There was no dryer but the washing line was across the road in a very unkempt field and therefore not accessible. All outdoor space was incredibly untidy and unsightly. The towels, while there was lots of them, were extremely thin and non absorbent."

"We had an excellent time. Kate was lovely when I spoke to her. It was so peaceful. And the views were stunning. Would definitely recommend to anyone wanting a peace filled break. Also a good central spot to visit the area."
