This 200-year-old, charming, detached former toll cottage set within the Brecon Beacons National Park has retained many of its period features. Caepost cottage sympathetically mixes the old with the new, the larger than average living/dining room with pillars, stone walls, wood burning stove, original oak beams and wooden shuttered windows contrasting perfectly with the generous contemporary kitchen and sun-room and a quirky, dogleg, oak staircase leading to the first floor. It is conveniently situated next to the quiet B4560 and perfectly placed on the edge of Talgarth. Comfortably furnished with every convenience to make your stay one to remember. Good mobile phone signals, Bluetooth stereo/CD in the living room with Wi-Fi throughout and bedside radio-USB-iPhone chargers in all of the bedrooms.
Peacefully situated within ½ an acre of wooded, dog friendly and private enclosed gardens, settle on the comfortable garden furniture on the raised decking or on the sofa in the sun room with a glass of wine or a cup of tea, taking in the wonderful views over the local fields and Black Mountains, especially at sunset. There is an abundance of wildlife - an ornithologist’s dream - buzzards, red kites and woodpeckers are regular visitors, with many of our guests having commented and enjoyed the bird feeding station outside the sun room.
Relax, unwind or just go wild. Caepost is close to the market town of Brecon, Crickhowell, Hay-on-Wye and Llangorse Lake, providing an ideal holiday base for visitors wishing to explore both the Black Mountains and the eastern end of the Brecon Beacons. With the Wye Valley to the north and the Usk Valley to the east, this area is home to many activities for all ages and abilities including walking, cycling, fishing, gliding, canoeing, mountain biking and horse riding.
The Brecon Beacons has been awarded the International Dark Sky Reserve status making it the first in Wales. So if it’s the stars you are after, just sit on the garden’s raised decking or drive to Llangorse Lake, 1 of 10 recommended spots and just 5 minutes from the cottage and just stargaze. The owner is a Brecon Beacons Ambassador so let him help with your itinerary if you require any help.
There are several lovely cycle routes, bridle paths, river walks and footpaths that can be accessed from the cottage. A heated swimming pool can be found 1 mile away on a local campsite that is open to the public during the summer season. A ¼-mile walk into Talgarth and you will find the tourist information office, cattle market and many award-winning shops, supplying locally produced food, butchers, delicatessen, supermarket, restaurants, cafés, fish and chip shop and 4 dog friendly pubs, the nearest being 300 yards.
The cottage was built in 1807 and is on the old road into Talgarth, where a tramway was constructed next to the cottage and tolls were taken from the horse draw drays that would pass by. Later on in around 1850 a railway was built that runs through the garden, but this was closed in the Beaching cuts of the 1960’s, there are still remnants of that time, including railway sleepers and rail line concrete pads, that have been incorporated into the landscaping around the cottage. The original oak beams are still in place and the remnants of the original bread oven can still be seen in the fire place, the owner at one time used to make bread and serve customers through a tiny window in the gable end of the house.

"Lovely, secluded cottage with beautiful views. Particularly liked the view of the stars in one of the bedrooms. Was ideal for a family get-together and would thoroughly recommend it."
    Louise – 29 Sep 2019
"This cottage is amazing and very dog friendly. The road next to the cottage was quite noisy. The inside of the cottage was lovely and clean. The outside needs a bit of tlc."
    Lyn – 22 Sep 2019
"Lovely place for a relaxing holiday, and very well equipped cottage, Bobby and Dillon loved the garden ."
    Elizabeth – 14 Sep 2019
"Very relaxing weekend with the old man and our 2 westies. Fab comfy cottage. Very clean and well-equipped. Road a bit noisy when spending time in the garden but double glazing very efficient so not a problem indoors. Furniture and beds comfortable- fantastic nights’ sleep. Wildlife in the garden is mesmerising- spent hours just staring out of the sun lounge at the bird feeding stations.Nearby, a walk to the Bridgend Inn in Talgarth is a must. The food is delicious, especially the Sunday roast. Friendly reception from everyone and dogs are welcome.Beautiful scenery all around - can easily get off the beaten track, even by car, and enjoy the amazing views the Brecon Beacons offer. Interesting towns nearby - Brecon, Hay, Abergavenny and Crickhowell.Hope to return to Caepost one day, preferably for a week. However, there is a for sale sign outside so don’t know if Caepost will continue to be a holiday rental. Do hope so!"

"A fantastic base for exploring the Brecons everywhere within half and hour. The village of Talgarth is lovely and would definitely recommend The Bridgend Inn for dinner and drinks. The cottage was so well stocked with everything you need its amazing."

"A fantastic cottage in a lovely location. Well furnished and very comfortable. Plenty of walks on the doorstep. Pubs 5 min away. Close to Hay On Wye, Brecon, Builth Wells and Llangors Activity centre.I would highly recommend this cottage."
    Graham – 6 Jul 2019
"I was concerned the cottage was close to the road and during the day there was some traffic noise. However that died away early evening so it was nice and quite for sleeping etc.Having a dog I found the fully enclose rear garden area ideal. It is a great area with BBQ facilities close to the cottage but sunny in the day evening. The viewing area overlooking fields is great on a sunny evening. Lots of bird feeders so frequent visits from birds and squirrels. Overall I'd say the rear area is second to none, fab.The cottage is well equiped with all you need. It has everything you have at home and I had friends who live in the area over for a meal and I lacked nothing to organise a great evening. I was there in the summer with good weather but I can see it as a great place for abreak all year long.I was impressed. I will be booking the cottage again, maybe Autumn/winter time. Liked it a great deal."
    Abigail – 22 Jun 2019
"We loved our stay at Caepost, a real spacious cottage with everything you could think of to make it a home from home. The local village is friendly and has many welcoming places to eat. Walks very close to the cottage for various abilities. The cottage has a superb garden for viewing birds and wildlife and our dog had a relaxing stay too."
    Bob – 15 Jun 2019
"Accommodation was perfect for our requirements. Just disappointed that the equipment in the games room as advertised was in a poor state of repair."
    Martyn – 23 Mar 2019
"We arrived at 7pm on a fairly miserable March day, and let ourselves in to find the cottage stone cold. It felt like there had been no heating on for days. We found the heating controls but we were still a bit chilly at bedtime. So first impressions were not ideal.Once we'd got the cottage warmed up everything was fine. There were some idiosyncrasies - e.g. there was no hot water in the upstairs shower room until we found the unlabelled switch for the heater in the adjacent bedroom. We found the cottage well equipped and comfortable. We did not use the garden area much but there were good views and plenty of space to enjoy in better weather."
    Mat – 3 Feb 2019
"Loved it at this cottage, very clean and warm. It has everything you need the explore the Beacons. Large garden for the dogs and a great wood burner for the snowy evenings !"
    Samantha – 24 Jan 2019
"Overall, very nice cottage, cosy, clean and very good for walking distance to the town. The only downfall was the departure time was to early should be moved to Midday."
    sue – 21 Jan 2019
"we loved it at this cottage, the location was really good, everything we needed was there and so cosy with the log fire keeping us so warm on the cold winter nights. we would love to go back in the warmer months when we could enjoy the garden which had a lovely view."
    Elizabeth – 3 Jan 2019
"Delightful cottage with plenty of room to relax and view the wildlife from the cosy sunroom. The village is within easy walking distance with interesting shops and good places to eat and drink. The owners could not have been more helpful; and were prepared to go out of their way to deal with what proved to be a very minor problem. We stayed over Xmas, and particularly appreciated the cottage having been decorated in style for the occasion, with a very seasonal “welcome pack” from the owners."
