Just 1km away is the heart of one of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’, a beautiful and historic perched village with glorious views of vineyards and fruit trees. There is a handful of shops, cafes and restaurants and summer flowers fill the narrow, steep streets. Make sure you sample some of the delicious local cherries if you are staying in the early summer.

Head to nearby Carpentras on a Friday morning for its unmissable market and spend time in the lively city of Avignon with its two UNESCO world heritage sites. L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue on a Sunday morning is also a must with its famous brocante or visit any day of the week to admire its little antique shops and picturesque setting.

Furthermore, you are perfectly located for the glorious Luberon region and archetypal Provençal villages such as Bonnieux, Roussillon and Van Gogh’s beloved Gordes, another one of France’s 'Plus Beaux Villages'.

At the end of your day exploring you’ll return to your calm and cool home where you can gaze at the starry night in this incredible part of southern France.

In the Vaucluse region of Provence, Villa Sommet is only 1km from one of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’. Set on a rocky peak with wonderful views of vineyards, fruit trees and other wild landscapes, this historic Provençal village is a joy to explore. Stroll around its flower-filled narrow, steep lanes coming across a handful of charming restaurants and shops. The local cherries are a delicacy of this area and can be found in local markets in early summer.

The bustling Friday morning market in nearby Carpentras is not to be missed if you arrive early enough or head there on other days to admire the town’s beautiful architecture. Pernes-les-Fontaines is another delightful place to explore with its many fountains, fascinating historic buildings and twice-weekly market selling all sorts of seasonal produce from the surrounding farmland such as pears, melons, almonds, strawberries, asparagus and more. Nearby vines produce a lovely sparkling wine that you will no doubt find in some of the village’s restaurants and bars.

Wine-lovers will also appreciate the many other wine routes across this part of Provence whether heading up towards the Rhône valley or visiting the vineyards of the Luberon.

Indeed, you are perfectly located for visiting much of the glorious Luberon region to the south-east with archetypal Provençal villages such as Bonnieux, Lacoste, Menerbes and Roussillon reached within a 45-minute drive. Even closer is Gordes (16km), another one of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’ which was much loved by Van Gogh. Across the Luberon you will find stunning landscapes for hiking and cycling as well as many rock-climbing opportunities and ancient caves to visit.

L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue (20km) is another gem of this area with its picturesque canals, water-wheels, riverside restaurants and characterful antique shops – the Sunday morning brocante is one of the most famous in southern France. Furthermore, canoeing or kayaking along the Sorgue river is a wonderful way to admire the surrounding scenery.

Cycling is another popular pursuit with trails throughout Vaucluse. The village of Bédoin (18km) is a mecca for cyclists and of course you are in close proximity to Mont Ventoux, famed for its challenging climb in the Tour de France.

The small but lively city of Avignon is a fine day out with its two unesco World Heritage sites, the Pope’s Palace and Saint Benezet Bridge, as well as many fantastic markets and restaurants. Or head south-west towards Les Alpilles with picture-perfect villages and towns such as Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, Eygalières and Les Baux-de-Provence just over an hour away by car.
