Cyathea is a stunning holiday home immersed in greenery in a delightful corner of Capri, an island in southern Italy. Built in the early 1950s and recently renovated, the bright, airy villa is projected in a typical Caprese style. It is surrounded by exotic vegetation, including maritime pine, prickly pears, and olive and cypress trees, all offering much-appreciated shade for relaxing.
Inside, 17th-century prints adorn the walls and fascinating antiques and furniture from the 19th century are scattered around. These time-honoured features are elegantly combined with contemporary items. Guests can unwind in the large living room with sofas and a TV corner, from where there is direct access to the idyllic terrace immersed in greenery. All except one of the bedrooms are located on the first floor and have double or French beds, allowing various groups to find the most comfortable sleeping solution. Most bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms, some even with free-standing claw-foot bathtubs. The kitchen is equally charming, with bright green tiles and all the equipment necessary to whip up a feast. The outdoor terrace is lovely and is perfect for drinking your morning coffee. Elsewhere on the grounds, you can find more quiet corners with garden furniture.
You’ll find it hard to leave this paradise, but the island has secret coves and sea caves you wouldn’t want to miss. The most famous one is the Blue Grotto, which boasts crystal clear turquoise waters and is just a 15-minute walk from the property. A small beach for snorkelling and swimming is also nearby when you want to refresh yourself on a hot day, and a street full of restaurants, nightclubs and boutiques is also within reach for fashionable evenings out.
Marina Grande, the main town and port on the island, is where you’ll most likely start your holiday, as it boasts a harbour from where boats and ferries leave for the mainland. It’s an excellent place for strolling along the promenade, shopping for souvenirs or enjoying an aperitif in the many bars.
Cyathea is in a quiet residential area full of other villas on Capri’s southern coastline, just a ferry ride from the Italian city of Naples.
An impressive chunk of limestone soaring from the Tyrrhenian Sea, Capri has been gaining attention since Roman times and in the mid-19th century, the island became a magnet for artists, intellectuals and especially writers, drawn by the inspirational scenery, gentle climate and dreamy, liberal lifestyle. Today, it retains much of its old-world grandeur, with jet setters flocking to its dazzling beach clubs and villas high above the sea.
10 minutes away, you can dip your toes into the warm sand (or pebbles) of Capri’s sweeping coastline on the closest beach, Spiaggia di Marina Piccola. Small and fantastic for swimming and snorkelling, it’s easy to spend a whole day here. Other nearby beaches include Spiaggia Torre Saracena and Da Gioia by La Palma, both with a beach bar serving locally caught seafood and cocktails in a laid-back setting.
A plethora of delicious restaurants can be found just a short drive away, with the closest one being just a 10-minute walk from the villa, while a supermarket can be reached in 5 minutes.
It’s an absolute must to explore all of Capri’s gems ranging from mysterious coves and pretty lagoons to breathtaking vantage points set high in the cliffs and sandy bays where you’ll be completely alone. Capri's wilder, more remote side can be explored through its network of footpaths - so put on your finest walking shoes and take a scenic trail to Saint James' Charterhouse historic monastery Airy, a 14th-century Carthusian monastery with diverse architecture, frescoes and gardens perfect for a late Italian picnic. Right next to it, Capri Overlook offers frame-worthy views of the sea and towering rock formations looming over inky-blue depths, the ones you’ll find printed on postcards in many local souvenir shops.
Another excellent area can be found near Via Camerelle – a bustling avenue lined with high-end boutiques and enveloped by a thread of restaurants where you can savour local delicacies after indulging in retail therapy. Other vantage points worth hiking include the Belvedere Tragara observation dock. Those who prefer admiring cliffs from the comfort of a boat shouldn’t miss the Grotta Albergo dei Marinai caves.
If you’re looking for a similar buzz, why not visit one of the island’s towns? Marina Grande is the main port and gateway to Italy’s mainland, with restaurants, beaches, shops and amenities. Here you can also jump on the trundling 1907 funicular that will take you up the cliffs or visit the Blue Grotto, the underwater cave discovered in 1826 by the German poet August Kopisch, with an iridescent blue light inside. You should also see the Piazzetta, a lovely square in the heart of the medieval town full of restaurants and bars that fill up during happy hour.
