Set in the bucolic Umbrian countryside known for its medieval hill towns, dense forests and local cuisine - particularly foraged truffles and wines – the Borgobrufa SPA Resort offers unrivalled comfort and wellness for a truly restorative holiday.
The spawning resort is perched on a hill, enabling guests to marvel at the sweeping views spanning from the hills of vineyards and olive groves to the noted art cities of Assisi, Perugia, Gubbio and Orvieto, and even to Spello and Spoleto.
The Romantic Suite is about enjoying joyful moments in comfort and privacy, allowing you to succumb to the beauty and harmony radiating all around. Inside, you'll find a large double bed facing the floor-to-ceiling sliding doors that lead to your private terrace. On cosy evenings, the two-person sofa and an electric fireplace will immediately set the mood – add a bottle of fizz or complete room service for the ultimate experience. In addition, the private outdoor terrace is equipped with lounge furniture and a jacuzzi, ensuring guests can elevate their holiday experience. The elegant and modern furnishing adds a contemporary touch, creating a fascinating contrast with the gentle and relaxing landscape outdoors.
From the outside, the resort maintains original Umbrian architecture and is decentralised, with suites and facilities connected by tunnels perfectly integrated with its surroundings. In the far-reaching lawned grounds, guests have direct contact with nature and are encouraged to soak up the magnificent views from the two swimming pools and other relaxation areas. All romantic suites have direct access to the resort's 1 Michelin Star restaurant and spa world, consisting of pools and saunas such as steam baths, panoramic, vitreum and aemotio saunas and more. Unwinding continues in the relaxation areas, each different – think twinkling night sky or a breathtaking nature panorama – and cabin treatments such as massages and body wraps. Both of the restaurants' on-site feature authentic flavours and Umbrian specialities based on prime, strictly seasonal ingredients entirely from Umbrian and local producers, and there are degustation menus accompanied by wine tasting available.
When you decide to leave the paradise, get to know the idyllic region first-hand – by taking a scenic drive to the hilltop city of Perugia – Umbria's capital known for its defensive walls built around the historic centre, as well as an array of other fascinating landmarks, restaurants and shops.
Nearby, you can discover Assisi, the birthplace of San Francis, or Spello, a walled town seducing architecture lovers with its winding streets and crumbling houses that come alive with flowers during summer months.
Other places worth your while include Orvieto on the border with Lazio, balancing on a volcanic butte above scenic plains and featuring a triumphal 14th-century cathedral, among other important architecture.
The Borgobrufa SPA Resort is nestled in an idyllic location enveloped by mediaeval towns, sleepy villages and undulating hills of central Italy's Umbria region, also known as 'the green heart of Italy'.
When you catch the itch to explore, you'll love the 10-minute walk to the nearest village Brufa featuring local amenities such as bakeries and a few restaurants. In the village of Ponte San Giovanni, you'll find a supermarket should you need to buy anything for your road trips too.
A great start to your road-tripping adventure is Perugia, located just a 15-minute drive away and offering plenty of opportunities to pass the time and explore the rich history and culture of the region. Walking through the city's winding alleyways, you'll see Etruscan archways, Gothic palazzos and charming cafés inviting you in for a coffee and local pastries. Looking onto Piazza IV Novembre, the Gothic cathedral houses Renaissance paintings and frescoes and in the square's centre, you'll find a marble fountain with carvings of biblical scenes and zodiac signs, Fontana Maggiore.
For more wholesome activities, head to the Parco Regionale del Lago Trasimeno – a large lake with swimming spots, lakeside restaurants and walking trails enveloped by greenery. On a hot summer day, cool down in the water on the Zocco beach, which boasts a swimming pool and lounge area, or head to the village of Monte del Lago for a pitstop, with many scenic hiking areas around, such as the Percorso pedonale naturalistico lungolago popular with cyclists and runners. Alternatively, in Porto Del Sole, you can stroll along the promenade and watch ferries come and go, relax by the waterfront or hire a boat to explore the tiny islet on the lake, Isola Maggiore.
Terni, also known as the 'City of Lovers', is an excellent place for a day trip and a comfortable 1-hour drive away. Walk around its pretty historic centre dotted with important archaeological remains such as a Roman amphitheatre and 12th and 5th-century churches, or visit the Parco Fluviale del Nera outside the city, with a fascinating man-made waterfall Cascata delle Marmore with enchanting forest trails and fantastic views.
When you can't get enough of the region's history, head to Assisi for a cultured day out. Known as the birthplace of St. Francis, it hosts an array of fascinating architecture, such as the massive unesco Basilica of St. Francis, reached by steep steps and featuring 13th-century frescoes portraying the life of the Italian saint as well as the crypt which houses his stone sarcophagus. Not too far from here, you can go hiking and exploring in Mone Subasio – a sloping mountain surrounded by a scenic park with paths for hiking, biking and horse-riding opportunities. Hikers can expect to be rewarded with sweeping country and mountain views from scenic points such as the Vetta Monte Subasio, Croce di Sassopiano and Vetta del Monte Subasio or head to one of its sleepy hilltop villages.
