Thrill-seekers can take on the challenge of Scafell Pike or test their motoring mettle on the Hardknott Pass; the Roman Fort here has well-marked remains and offers spectacular views as far as the Isle of Man. For more leisurely days out, Ravenglass, 4 miles north, is a coastal hamlet within the Lake District National Park and home to the narrow gauge Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway. Nearby Muncaster Castle has gorgeous gardens plus the Hawk and Owl Centre where you can watch awe-inspiring flying displays.
