Howegrain Lodge is remote - which is exactly what we were looking for. It's on the edge of the Martindale deer forest and we especially wanted to see the red deer during the rut. We weren't disappointed, 80 animals seen on one morning walk. We were glad there was no TV, wi-fi or mobile signal on this cul-de-sac single track road. The converted chapel has walls over a foot thick and we were hardly aware of the wind and rain. The kitchen/living area was well appointed with an electric (halogen) cooker, fridge and kitchen equipment. There is a folding dining table - but no dining chairs provided (that we could find). There was a supply of logs and kindling for the wood-burning stove which lasted us for four October nights. The stove was very efficient and attractive. The double bedroom is quite small, as the bedhead touches one wall and the foot, the other. It was comfortable and the quilt was warm. We didn't use the bunk bedroom. There were no instructions for the heating systems. We worked out that the remote-controller/thermostat (in a kitchen drawer) operates the gas-fired central heating; this (quite rightly) only appeared to work in the mornings and evenings, so was able to prevent a waste of gas during the daytime when guests are out. There is underfloor heating too, in the tiles areas (kitchen, hall and shower-room) - which we quickly figured out on the day of arrival. You need to manually turn this off during the day to save electricity. The single-track road is so narrow, the parking is 80yds away down by the bridge over the beck - which was no bother at all. So, in summary, a very lovely cottage for anyone wanting a remote getaway. Advice: If the owners could provide some laminated instructions for the heating systems, it would certainly help those unfamiliar with such controls.

I thought I was getting a cabin or cottage of sorts. This is a converted chapel and not a very well converted one at that. We could feel the dampness in that place. For what we paid, we expected something much better. We didn't even stay, we had a look and left immediately. We had to book a hotel elsewhere that very evening.
