Just a short stroll from Ambleside, you'll find The Mews, a fantastic character cottage on the banks of the River Rothay. This sublime setting has stunning panoramic views, and the property itself is a smart and stylish retreat with an illustrious history. It was once a coachman's cottage and stables, then later was home to Queen Victoria's physician and more recently to a local artist.
This smart and stylish property has undergone a contemporary renovation, making best use of the original stable space, to create an outstanding interconnected living area with lots of light and full of charm. Features include old oak beams, sleek slate floors and a wood burning stove. The bedrooms are generously sized and bright, whilst the gardens are wonderful on sunny days with strategically placed patios and a footpath to Loughrigg Fell.
The elegant entrance hallway has breathtaking views, the lounge has bags of character and is made cosy by a wood burning stove and luxury leather sofa. An open kitchen / diner room makes meal times sociable and fun and the three bedrooms are beautifully presented. Outside, a large garden leads to a private woodland glade and up the side of Loughrigg Fell.
Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.

Even the weather was brilliant. There was a power cut mid week across the area that affected the WiFi for 2 days but apart from that we had a really fantastic stay

Right on the river Rothay⦠which with all the rain provided a very dramatic backdrop. Loved the whole tripâ¦. thanks.

We are big walkers and only 1 1/4-mile stroll into Ambleside was perfect then the opposite way a 4 1/2-mile walk to Grasmere either along the lake or up higher for more adventure. The Badger Bar was a short walk from the cottage with great food, friendly staff and outside garden area to enjoy. The cottage was so spacious but relaxing having all windows looking over a babbling brook and open fields with sheep made it idyllic. Cannot wait to return and please do not let this little piece of heaven slip away as we found "Our Happy Place"
