Herdwick Cottage is highly praised for its comfort, cleanliness, and well-equipped facilities, making it an ideal stay for both walking holidays and family getaways. The decor and thoughtful touches, including a welcome gift, are appreciated by guests. While the location is convenient for outings and the town of Brampton, light sleepers should note the nearby church bells.

Guests that stayed at this property said

Guests consistently describe the cottage as spotless and very clean, indicating a high standard of cleanliness.

The location is generally praised for its convenience and proximity to local attractions, though one guest was disappointed with the courtyard setting and another mentioned the disturbance from church bells.

The cottage is frequently commended for its comfortable beds and furnishings. However, one mention of a hot single bedroom suggests a minor issue with comfort.

Facilities are well-regarded, with mentions of a well-stocked kitchen and high-quality items. Some guests faced challenges with the heating and child lock on the hob, indicating slight room for improvement in maintenance.

The presence of a welcome gift and extras like guidebooks and maps show thoughtfulness. However, as gifts are subject to change and not guaranteed, this score reflects the overall thoughtfulness of the amenities provided.

About this property

This beautifully presented cottage is just a five-minute stroll into the centre of Brampton and is an ideal base for walkers and families exploring Cumbria and the Scottish Borders. After a busy day hiking, cycling, or wandering, kick off your walking boots before sinking into one of the plush velvet green sofas and flicking on the Smart TV; give your feet a rest and unwind here before preparing dinner in the fully equipped kitchen/diner. The rustic wooden dining table is a good space for five to dine together, maybe with a glass of wine or perhaps wander onto the patio surrounded by a pretty garden with the sound of the church clock of St Martin’s. When sleep calls, retire to any of the bedrooms: there is a king size double, a twin and a single room all serviced by a sleek modern bathroom. Brampton offers a range of amenities including friendly pubs, Berry’s Tearoom, Cranston’s Foodhall, farm shop and gift shops. Spend the day exploring the historic and beautiful Lanercost Priory close to Hadrian’s Wall; walk around the stunning Talkin Tarn; visit some of the many historic sites such as Birdoswald Roman Fort, or maybe wander in the beautiful and ancient Miltonrigg Woods. All these are within a ten-mile radius of Brampton. The Pennine Way is an amazing long-distance trail only half an hour’s drive away within the North Pennines AONB and The Lake District National Park is filled with walks and trails where you can experience yet more breath-taking countryside of Cumbria. Choose Herdwick Cottage as your base for a relaxing countryside retreat to Brampton, Cumbria.

Brampton is the ideal location from which to explore Hadrian's Wall. The town's history dates back to the Roman occupation, Border reivers from Scotland, and the Jacobite uprisings. Additionally, Bonnie Prince Charlie established his headquarters in one of Brampton's old buildings. In the town's centre is Moot Hall, which was constructed in 1817 and now houses the Tourist Information Centre. To the east of the town is a large motte that is 135 feet tall and features a statue of the 7th Earl of Carlisle. A few miles outside of Brampton, Talkin Tarn Country Park can be found. It encompasses 120 acres of farmland and forest, 65 of which comprise the Tarn, a 10,000-year-old glacial lake fed by underground springs. Two miles away is Gelt Woods, an rspb nature reserve and ancient woodland with the River Gelt running through it. Brampton is an ideal location from which to explore this historic and beautiful region.

We really enjoyed ourselves, thank you very much.

  • Hayley

The beds were comfortable and the cottage was warm and homely. Our only negative was the church bells that go through the night. Not great if you are a light sleeper.

  • Anne

The cottage is clean, warm, well equipped and brilliantly located for walking in a village with all the facilities you could want.
