A handful of excellent restaurants with a focus on regional fish can be found in Ilfracombe. The distinctive towns of Lynton and Lynmouth, with their clifftop railway, are to the east of Ilfracombe, and Clovelly and Hartland are to the west. I read several negative reviews of this property. Situated in a perfect location Myrtle House is a lovely period property. The owners sent me a nice welcome message and there were some cakes and milk left in the fridge. With ample room for all the family, we never felt cramped. However, please read the following carefully! The current lack of games room did disappoint our 3 children, there is a hidden darts board, kids multi play table (located at the top of the 3 storey staircase!) with lack of stair gates to the stairs apart from one at the very bottom. The major issue with this property (I am a builder) is the plumbing. The owners state in a previous review response that the plumbing has alway been like this. The waste pipe from the shower room runs to the courtyard which then leaks onto the outside seating as a result of a major blockages in the sewage system or lack of vent pipe. Every morning that we woke and entered the kitchen the smell of raw sewage was over bearing enough to have to open up all the windows and doors. This problem needs considerable investment. It was quite horrible for 7 people to use a shower with a tray full of dirty water taking over an hour to drain. We also felt that the property could do with a deep clean with attention needed under the sofa cushions and windows that were filthy. I feel that the property could be a wonderful asset to the owners, however there are some issues that need resolving in order to keep a good name. Please consider these last few reviews before booking.

I had read the reviews of previous guests about cleanliness and maintenance and trusted that these would have been dealt with but they weren't. Upon arrival I had to call the property manager to say that the property did not appear to have been cleaned. It was appreciated that cleaners came swiftly and it did make a difference. However, the issues that other guests have mentioned still persist - dirty cushions for the outdoor seating rammed in the downstairs toilet, broken toilet seat (and window propped up by toilet roll), shower that doesn't drain (unsustainable with 6 people having daily showers), filthy windows (ad to keep curtains drawn they were so disgusting), dirty garden (did not bother to sit outside or let the dog out either). It's a shame; it could be a lovely property to stay at but it doesn't seem any care and attention is dedicated to it's upkeep.

It was not made clear that the parking does not suit an SUV. A note on 24 hour car parks would have been helpful; these are not expensive.
