About this property

This stone built semi-detached cottage is found in the heart of the village of Hartland, near the dramatic North West Devon coast. There are plenty of village amenities just a couple of minutes’ stroll from the front door, such as an independent village store, post office, doctors surgery, veterinary practice, craft shop, potteries, fish and chip shop, café and village pubs. The cottage is set back from the village street, and feels really secluded with its enclosed front and rear courtyard gardens and mature shrubs. Once inside there are stone fireplaces with woodburners, exposed beams and antique latches, all of which create a feeling of warmth, character, and charm. On the ground-floor there are two main reception rooms off the entrance hallway, and together they provide an ample space for families to spend some quality time together. The sitting room with woodburner is ideal for relaxing in the comfy sofas in front of the fire after an invigorating hike on the spectacular south west Coast Path past Hartland Quay. Choose to cook a hearty meal in the well-equipped kitchen/diner, with a dishwasher as an added benefit, so no squabbling over who is doing the washing-up! There are three sizeable bedrooms all with a contemporary feel, mixing some lovely antique pieces of furniture and rustic beams with colourful décor. Together they sleep up to six guests in the form of a super-king, double and twin sized bedrooms. The enclosed courtyard garden with comfy seating, accessed via French doors from the sitting room offers a peaceful area for some light reading. This unspoilt area of North Devon is known for its dramatic cliffs, waterfalls, and selection of expansive sandy beaches such as Westward Ho! and Bude. Keen walkers can explore the area via the South West Coast Path and can use this to access the unique cobbled village of Clovelly, which truly is a step back in time. There are numerous excellent pubs serving local produce and ales, such as The Hart Inn and the Kings Arms in Hartland and The Farmers Arms in the nearby village of Woolsery. Other attractions and places of interest in the area include the market town of Bideford, offering an array of amenities and day trips to Lundy Island, The Big Sheep and The Milky Way adventure parks. 82 The Square is an ideal base from which to explore this beautiful part of Devon

The village of Hartland, whose parish includes the hamlet of Stoke to the west and the village of Meddon in the south, is the most northwesterly settlement in the county of Devon, England. The town of Hartland is remote and hosts many craft shops and potteries in addition to cafés and restaurants. There is a long main street, with cottages either side, leading to the town square and the church of St John. Enjoy views of the coastline in the British Isles from Hartland Point. There are many vantage points, accessible by car or on foot, from which you can admire views of the coast. Not far away is Hartland Quay, with much to see and available accommodation. A local Shipwreck Museum is certainly worth a visit.

Owner was friendly & keen to make stay as comfortable & enjoyable as possible. A welcome pack of eggs, bacon & milk had been left in fridge. Cottage was warm & cosy with very homely feel -suitable for all year round holidays. We really enjoyed the log burner in the sitting room & the view looking out onto the sweet little back garden. The cottage is ideally located for all the village amenities.....coffee shop round the corner, pub opposite & for woodland walks & longer walks down to Hartland Quay. We had a delightful stay- thankyou Linda- and would highly recommend this holiday cottage.

Parked up in the village car park and off we went looking for the cottage. In the email we received we were told to look for a black gate, just behind the house that sticks out opposite the pub. We couldn’t find this gate. And after walking around in the rain, we saw a wooden fence like gate, with the number 82 on and realised it was there (might be worth updating the description). The cottage itself is lovely and quaint. Just what you’d want and expect from a traditional style cottage, with the added bonus of having front and back enclosed areas for the dog and granddaughter. The downstairs of the property is really well thought out, and has everything you could possibly need. The Christmas decorations were a lovely touch, and made the cottage feel really cosy. The welcome gifts were also a nice unexpected treat! Upstairs doesn’t seem to be as well thought out as downstairs, and we felt the rooms could do with a bit of an update. Everything seemed a bit of a mish mash. That said, the beds were super quality, and extremely comfortable which is all you need really. My only real negative was the temperature of the upstairs. Yes, it’s a traditional stone cottage, which takes a lot to warm, but we slept in our pjs and dressing gowns most nights as it was freezing upstairs. I did message the owner a couple of times about this and she did turn the heating up. But warmth is a real individual thing, and what one person may feel is warm, another may not. And 20 degrees in Winter is not what I would call warm. The radiators were never hot to the touch, and we never saw the digital temperature above 19.5. The owner did supply us with a basket of logs and kindling, and advised us to use the log burner to warm the house. We spent an additional £50 on wood etc which did help warm upstairs and keep our grandchild warm. But I really don’t think we should've had to have spent this in addition to the price we paid for the cottage. No other cottage I have ever stayed in have I not had control over the temperature myself, and I didn’t like having to ask for the heat to be turned up. It felt like I was a child again, asking my parents to turn the heating up and then being told to put thicker socks on or a thicker jumper! I really urge you let your guests have some control over the temperature in the cold Winter months. I appreciate it’s expensive to heat the cottage, but it really makes or breaks the comfort of the stay. The village is lovely, and the locals are super welcoming. It’s a great location to explore Devon.

The owner is an absolute sweetheart, great communication even prior to our arrival and some essentials left in the kitchen to welcome us were greatly appreciated. Yes the oven is noisy but it works fine, you need to lift the gate when you open it, none of those things impacted our stay. We took two kids and wifi wasn't an issue. Great set up for anyone taking a dog, hard floors which are easy to wipe down, safe, enclosed yard for late night toilet trips and not too many "dog rules" (only what you'd expect, no dogs on furniture, clean up in the yard). We were warm and comfortable and would definitely stay again next time we visit Devon. Thank you Linda!
