About this property

Orchard Cottage takes its name from its lovely views of an old cider apple orchard, and can be found nestled at the edge of the quaint Somerset village of North Curry. This characterful home from home is wonderfully suited to both couples and families; it’s not only a relaxing retreat, but also a perfect location to tour the West Country. The property is on the edge of the Somerset Levels, surrounded by stunning, peaceful countryside, with hills, moors and two coastlines, plus all manner of attractions within close reach. The kitchen/diner is the heart of the property; its exposed brick walls, traditional wooden beams, range cooker and farmhouse table bring a homely feel to the room, where you can enjoy evenings together. Retire to the elegant sitting room, where a woodburning stove brings a cosy warmth, whilst you make the most of the Sky and Netflix packages. Or, if you're seeking a quiet moment to yourself, spend some time in the garden room with its view of the orchard, and is a prime spot to relax in the afternoon and evening sunshine, as you watch TV, listen to the radio, or curl up with a good read. A selection of books, board games and puzzles is available, to keep everyone entertained. At the end of each day, take your pick from three beautifully presented bedrooms to rest in, with two double rooms, a twin with a single and a sofa bed (a small double), large family bathroom, with bath and walk-in shower, plus a downstairs cloakroom. Each room offers ample storage, and there is a porch and outdoor covered drying space for beach and walking gear galore. Be sure to soak up beautiful views from the house’s third of an acre garden, including private, gated areas with plenty of space for children and your canine companions to roam safely, as you dine alfresco, under beautiful Somerset skies or beneath the sheltered patio area. A short stroll from the property will bring you to the centre of North Curry, where you will find a convenient Post Office, well-stocked village stores and characterful country pub that’s perfect for a Sunday lunch or evening meal, after a busy day of exploring. The village is also home to the marvel that is The Church of St Peter & St Paul, known as ‘The Cathedral of the Moors' – a stunning landmark with spectacular views across the Somerset Levels to the Quantock Hills and the Vale of Taunton Deane. Orchard Cottage is a haven for walkers and cyclists, with numerous beautiful routes to explore, from your doorstep (maps and guides to the local area are provided by the owners). Close at hand are the level paths alongside the River Tone or Bridgwater and Taunton Canal, where you can also take to the water with boat trips or kayak hire. More strenuous hikes take you along the East Deane Way or up Burrow Mump and, on clear days, you can spot the iconic Glastonbury Tor. North Curry is within ready reach of many attractions, amenities and beauty spots. The Willows and Wetlands Centre, complete with its tea room, is within a mile, as is a traditional cider farm where you can sample scrumpy to enjoy the true taste of Somerset. The nearby county town of Taunton offers a wide range of shops, restaurants and historic buildings, including the castle which houses the Museum of Somerset. In the surrounding area, you will find the Quantock Hills leading to the north coast, which can be accessed via stream trains on the West Somerset Railway – England’s longest heritage line. The retail outlets of Clarks Village are close by, with Glastonbury, home of the internationally famous festival and the centre of Arthurian legend just beyond, while the rolling Blackdown Hills and the Jurassic Coast of East Dorset and Dorset – including the wonderful town of Lyme Regis – are to the south. Excellent transport links, via road and rail mean the historic cities of Exeter and Bristol, along with the Georgian splendour of Bath and the tiny cathedral city of Wells, plus tourist spots and visitor attractions like Wookey Hole, Cheddar Gorge and the seaside town of Weston-super-Mare are less than an hour away.
