Situated at the entrance to Swaledale, the ancient market town of Richmond stands on a prominent hilltop site to the north of the River Swale. Its cobbled streets and narrow alleys or 'wynds' enshrine over nine centuries of busy history and unique character. The town grew up around its castle, a Norman fortress dating back to 1071, famously situated high above the river - indeed the name Richmond is derived from 'Riche-mont' meaning 'strong hill'. Today there are wonderful walks to be enjoyed such as the Castle Walk - a dramatic terrace walk beneath the castle walls - or alternatively walk alongside the River Swale where there are parks, safe paddling areas and small waterfalls to enjoy. Within the town, narrow streets and alleys radiate from the cobbled Market Place (which has a weekly market and monthly farmers’ market) and there are numerous shops, pubs and restaurants to enjoy. The town flourished in the 18th and 19th centuries and the resulting elegant Georgian architecture lines many of the old streets. The Georgian Theatre is one of the oldest surviving theatres in the country with visitors enjoying its regular productions all year round.

The most important issue is the address, this cottage is not at 6 Easby Mews it is 6 Easby Court in another part of the village. We were confused at arriving at 6 Easby Mews as this did not appear to be the cottage in the pictures, after trying to find a key safe or a way round the back of the property we saw someone walking their dog and asked him, he confirmed this address was not a holiday cottage, he kindly suggested walking with him to see if we could find the property matching the pictures, eventually we did and the correct address is 6 Easby Court, most annoying. We have phoned Sykes to correct this but over a week later it is still showing as 6 Easby Mews on the website. Also there is only one set of outside seating which was being used by the neighbouring cottage but there was also no room to put the seating out as everyone's cars filled the courtyard. On the positive side the upstairs of the property was lovely, very plush and the welcome tray was a lovely thought.

The welcome basket was a lovely touch. There were plenty of towels and it was great that there was toilet rolls and hand wash provided. It was nicely presented, but some of the fixtures and fittings were quite cheap and some were broken. The advert was very misleading. I don’t believe the pictures are even of the property, but rather the cottage next door. There was no dishwasher or washing machine as stated on the listing. The TV is listed as a smart TV, which it is not. It is a 15 year old plasma with an Amazon Fire Stick. There is no aerial, so you are completely reliant on the wi-fi, which is absolutely terrible. It’s not broadband, just a little box with a sim in it. We moved it upstairs which made it slightly better. The outdoor furniture was outside the next door property and was in full use by our neighbours. The kitchen was well stocked, but again some things were quite cheap or old. It was great that there was kitchen rolls, tea towels, washing up liquid, etc. One of the bedroom windows wouldn’t close and the bathroom window had been painted shut. Once we got it opened, it was really difficult to get it closed again. The outside bin was completely full and there was no information on recycling or which day the bins were emptied. There wasn’t any instructions on how to leave the property, ie whether or not we should strip the beds. The property could be lovely, but it needs some attention. Thankfully what the property lacked, the area made up for.
