Locally, you can explore Dumfries Museum, which is the largest museum in the region, steeped in history. It has extensive collections relating to the locals and details of the pre-historic era. It also has the world's oldest working Camera Obscura. Why not visit the Garden of Cosmic Speculation? This 30-acre sculptured garden, created by landscape architect and theorist Charles Jencks offers a wonderful setting inspired by modern cosmology. For a taste of history, venture towards Caerlaverock Castle, a moated triangular castle, which was first built in the 13th century and is classed as one of Scotland's great medieval castles, with an impressive twin-towered gatehouse and moat. Dumfries is a market town and former royal burgh within the Dumfries and Galloway council area of Scotland. Located on top of a small hill, Dumfries Museum is centred on the 18th-century windmill which stands above the town. Included are fossil footprints left by prehistoric reptiles, the wildlife of the Solway marshes, tools and weapons of the earliest peoples of the region and stone carvings of Scotland's first Christians. There are many buildings in Dumfries made from sandstone of the local Locharbriggs quarry.
