A rugged stone villa with views out over Zaton Bay, 4-bedroom Villa Maro lies north west of Dubrovnik, on the way to Orašac and Trsteno. With the city’s Old Town around 15 minutes’ drive away, this well-located property offers glorious views and great outdoor spaces, including a heated pool and hot tub.
Just 300m from the beach, Villa Maro is conveniently located for local amenities, yet also offers privacy and peace. The terrace area gives you lots to enjoy, with a lounge area, hammock and a covered dining area and kitchen complete with bar seating and TV. There’s a large barbecue to keep the food coming all evening, as well as a magnificent hot tub from which to enjoy views of the beautiful surroundings.
In a separate area above, you have the heated pool and sun deck with plenty of loungers and parasols. And if all that’s not enough, there’s even a basketball court and table tennis should you fancy a game.
Inside, modern living spaces with rustic touches offer optimal comfort. The living room has two large sofas and an LCD TV with satellite channels. There’s ample dining space and a well-equipped kitchen which open out on to a balcony with sea view.
Two king-size bedrooms are complemented by two more with twin beds – these can be converted to king-size beds if needed. Neutral tones and splashes of colour lend a stylish feel to these rooms, which are complemented by three bathrooms.
This idyllic stretch of coast is the ideal base for exploring Dubrovnik. You’ll be around 10 minutes from the Trsteno Arboretum and not much further from the fortified Old Town. Good beaches, excellent restaurants and mountain-bound cable car rides will provide plenty to remember about your stay, while a voyage to the beautiful Elafiti Islands should also be on your to-do list.
The coast north of Dubrovnik is lined with pretty spots much quieter than the bustling city. Beaches, olive groves and vineyards all contribute to its beauty. East of Dubrovnik, it’s not long before Croatia ends and Bosnia & Herzegovina begins, while Montenegro is less than an hour’s drive south. In this direction, you have yet more idyllic coastal spots, such as Cavtat and Molunat, that are worth exploring.
Despite the many attractions further out, it’s Dubrovnik’s Old Town that is the focus for many visitors. To be fair, it is stunning – walking the City Walls is an experience which rewards you with spectacular Adriatic views. For more of those, you can take a cable car ride up to Mt Srd. As you do, you can also admire the Old Town and look out to the nearby islands.
A cultural hub, the city lays on plenty of entertainment, whether on the streets or in venues across town. The Dubrovnik Summer Festival is an annual event, as is a Venetian-style carnival each February. You can visit an array of museums in the city, including the Maritime Museum and a Museum of Modern Art.
You may also like to check out the Red History Museum, dedicated to the 20th-century days of Yugoslavia, which features various curious artefacts of the time. Venture south of Dubrovnik, and you’ll soon come to Lovrenijac, a sturdy fortress which these days hosts theatrical performances.
Tourism in Dubrovnik has benefitted greatly from its prominence in the series Game of Thrones. Various organised excursions will show you the places featured, one of which lies just up the coast from Zaton and Orašac – the Trsteno Arboretum. Combine your visit with a stop-off in nearby Brsečine, former home of Croatian poetess, Cvijeta Zuzorić. An idyllic beach is not too far from the arboretum.
Down the coast, captivating Cavtat is both charming and richly historic. Attractions here include the Rector’s Palace and the House of Vlaho Bukovac, dedicated to a noteworthy local artist. Head
beyond Dubrovnik Airport, and you could also stop at Molunat. Said to be Croatia’s southernmost visitor destination, its sandy beaches, fragrant pine woods and the relative isolation make it an appealing one. There are a couple of good restaurants and a few bars, but not too much else – perfect for when you want a lazy day away from the crowds.
Villa Maro is based in Zaton bay, can accommodate up to 8 people, featuring 4 bedooms, a private heated pool/jacuzzi, a fully equipped kitchen, and all the needed amenities for a comfortable stay.

We had a fabulous week in a fabulous country in a fabulous villa! The villa is situated in Zaton a small resort with a couple of bars and water sports facilities. It is a beautiful, easy walk along to the next resort which offers a few more restaurants and shops. The views are spectacular. Irena suggested places of interest and shared local information regarding which shops are cheaper etc. Having 2 mini supermarkets one either side of the villa made it so convenient for all provisions. There was plenty of room in the villa with 4 ample double bedrooms with air conditioning. The indoor and outdoor kitchen were both well stocked with everything you could need. The weather was glorious so we had a BBQ most evenings. The sun loungers and outdoor furniture were of good quality and comfortable for lazy days around the pool. The pool was clean and inviting, the hot tub a bonus if the weather hadn't been so warm! There was also shade available at all times of the day! The villa is set on 3 levels so looking out from the pool terrace you can see across to the islands and watch the sun setting in Zaton bay.
