About this property

In the heart of Barfleur, just a short walk from its historic port and the open sea, La Maison des Lys combines the comfort of a well-loved home with the pleasure of a Normandy escape. Light filters softly through the rooms, creating spaces that feel calm, welcoming and perfectly suited to time spent together.

Step through the entrance into the inviting ground floor. A cosy living room with fireplace encourages slow evenings after days exploring, while the dining room opens directly onto the walled garden, ideal for family meals outdoors. The kitchen is thoughtfully equipped for cooking chez vous, complete with a La Cornue range and other useful appliances. A double en suite bedroom on this level also opens to the pretty garden. Outside, admire agapanthes, climbing wisteria, hydrangeas and an olive tree, with espalier fruit trees, herbs and summer roses adding scent and colour. A granite bench catches the evening sun, making it a favourite spot at day’s end.

The upper floors provide charming accommodation across five bedrooms. The first floor includes two restful rooms and a modern shower room, while the top level features a twin and a single bedroom, served by a small bathroom. From one of the bedrooms, gentle sea views remind you how close the shoreline lies.

La Maison des Lys sits at the heart of Barfleur, one of Normandy’s prettiest fishing villages, celebrated for its unique light and enduring maritime atmosphere. Wander along the quayside past granite houses and narrow lanes, pause for coffee or moules frites at a local café, and continue on foot to the beach with views towards the lighthouse.

Beyond Barfleur, the Cotentin peninsula opens up with wild beaches, sailing and coastal walks. Saint Vaast la Hougue and Île Tatihou lie close by, while Cherbourg, La Hague and the historic D Day beaches are all within easy reach, offering a rich and varied backdrop to your stay.

La Maison des Lys enjoys a privileged position in the heart of Barfleur, one of France’s officially designated Plus Beaux Villages. This authentic fishing port is renowned for its granite houses, tidal harbour and maritime atmosphere. Staying here means immersing yourself in a village where daily life still revolves around the sea, with boats bobbing in the harbour and the sound of gulls overhead.

One of the great pleasures of this location is the ease of exploring on foot. From the front door, it’s only a short stroll to the harbour and waterfront, where the light shifts beautifully across the water throughout the day. A gentle walk in the opposite direction brings you to the beach, an ideal spot to breathe in the highly iodised sea air, long prized for its health-giving qualities.

Barfleur’s quayside is lined with inviting cafés and restaurants, perfect for lingering lunches or relaxed evenings. Among them, the atmospheric Café de la France is well known for serving wild-harvested moules de Barfleur when in season. Twice a week, the local market fills the village with colour and scent, offering exceptional regional produce including crab, lobster, cream, butter, cheeses, fruit, vegetables and local cider. Practical amenities are close at hand too, with shops, restaurants and a small supermarket all within walking distance.

For those keen to explore further, bike hire can be arranged locally, while walkers are spoilt for choice with scenic routes starting directly from Barfleur. A standout trail leads to Le Phare de Gatteville (3km), France’s second tallest lighthouse, following part of the GR223 coastal path with sweeping sea views.

To explore further afield, a car is essential. To the south, Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue (11km) charms with its marina, oyster restaurants and the Vauban Tower, a unesco World Heritage site accessible on foot, while low tide reveals the route to Tatihou Island by amphibious boat.

A little further afield, the maritime city of Cherbourg (28km) offers an excellent day out, particularly La Cité de la Mer museum and aquarium. History enthusiasts will also appreciate nearby wwii landmarks such as Quinéville’s World War II Museum (20km) and the Utah Beach Landing Museum (35km), with the iconic D-Day beaches of Omaha (80km) and Arromanches-les-Bains (100km) reachable within around 90 minutes by car.
