The historic heart of Sarlat (1km downhill) can be reached on foot or within a very short drive, bringing its atmospheric medieval lanes, honey-coloured stone architecture and enticing markets within easy reach. For a different perspective on the surrounding countryside, bicycles can be hired in Sarlat, including beside the start of the local voie verte cycle route.

Beyond town, the landscapes of the Dordogne Valley beckon. Visit the beautiful riverside village of La Roque-Gageac (15km) or hilltop Domme (14km), both wonderfully placed for exploring the river, or discover the magnificent châteaux scattered along the Dordogne’s banks. Les Jardins de Marqueyssac (12km) are another highlight, with six kilometres of paths weaving between sculpted boxwood, viewpoints and romantic gardens high above the valley.

Families can add a little adventure at I Feel Wood (8km), an outdoor treetop park with courses and zip lines for different ages and abilities. Alternatively, the Zoological Reserve Calviac (11km) offers shaded trails through a conservation-focused wildlife park specialising in endangered species.
