In a pretty countryside setting, just a short drive from the beautiful market town of Bergerac, Château de la Cheine is a wonderful place for family holidays, celebrations or a reunion of friends. Relax in glorious surroundings and be brilliantly near world-famous vineyards and fine local cuisine.

Set in stunning private grounds, the château features a good-sized swimming pool and picturesque gardens, kids will love exploring the woodland! Bergerac is only 6km away where you can explore the historic lanes, visit the famous Maisons de Vins and dine in some excellent restaurants. Wine-lovers can visit some of the local vineyards and châteaux whilst further afield you can head to the wine-town of Saint-Émilion or the wineries around Bordeaux.

The area is famed also for its archaic historical sites and is within easy reach of all the famous 'Perigord' tourist attractions including some of the region’s most charming villages along the Dordogne river. Not to mention canoeing, walking, cycling and golf nearby. This really is relaxing Dordogne at its very best.

Château de la Cheine is in the local commune of Ginestet, a predominately wine and agricultural area. It’s just a short drive from the historic market town of Bergerac (6km), making it an ideal location for exploring this region of Dordogne.

Local activities across the region include walking, cycling, fishing, golf, horse-riding, canoeing, tennis whilst there is also go-karting near Bergerac and tree-top activities in the forests north of the Dordogne.

One of the best activities if of course wine-tasting in some of Bergerac’s finest vineyards. Wine-lovers should also head further afield towards the wine-town of Saint-Émilion (70km) or the wineries around Bordeaux around ninety minutes away.

Beautiful Bergerac is a fantastic town to explore with its historic architecture, charming shops and Maisons des Vins. Visit on a Wednesday and Saturday morning to experience the atmospheric food market and buy plenty of local produce to enjoy back at your château. Other great markets nearby include Eymet (33km) on a Thursday morning, lovely Issigeac (25km) on a Sunday morning and another Saturday morning market in Sainte-Foy-la-Grande (26km).

Other highlights of the Dordogne include two of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’, Monpazier and Monflaquin as well as stunning riverside spots along the Dordogne such as Domme, Beynac-et-Cazenac and La Roque-Gageac.

For more fantastic markets, beautiful architecture and amazing restaurants, both Périgueux  (50km) and Sarlat-la-Canéda (80km) are worthy day trips, as are the fascinating Lascaux Caves (105km), a unesc World Heritage site just over an hour away.

I recently booked Chateau de la Cheine for my 30th birthday celebrations for five nights in early November. We were 19 adults (30 - 45 years old), and the Chateau easily and comfortably accommodated all of us in its ten spacious bedrooms. With its two large living rooms, dining room, games room and kitchen, there was no shortage of space for everyone to spend time in - which worked out well as we had a couple of rainy days! The Chateau was very well heated and Karen ensured that we were always well stocked with firewood. I asked Karen to cater my birthday dinner and she cooked us a lovely 4 course meal and made me a birthday cake. On the afternoon of the dinner, she very kindly came and arranged the dining room with lovely white tablecloths, dining settings and candles. The dinner and local wine provided was delicious and reasonably priced (25 per head), and we had plenty of leftovers for the next day too! There was lots to explore in the area around the Chateau. Bergerac is a lovely town with plenty of excellent restaurants, and of course there are the incredible chateaux, restaurants and vineyards of Bordeaux just a short drive away. (The grounds of the Chateau themselves are also very beautiful and we managed to fit in a few lovely walks and runs.) All in all, I would highly recommend this Chateau for large groups and for families. Karen and her family are very welcoming, responsive and professional, and the Chateau itself is very good value for money. We definitely hope to come back again in summer!

We stayed for a week at the Chateau for my husband's 40th birthday and it was perfect. The grounds were beautiful and well kept and the house had a lot of space and fun activities for the whole family. The owner catered a home coocked French meal one night and it was delicious. For the rest of our stay, we had easy access to Bergerac for supermarket runs or lunches in town. She went out of her way to ensure we were confortable and was alzays around to answer any questions or give us advice on what to do in the nearby areas.
