A wine château that was left abandoned for over thirty years, Château Beau Médoc’s new owners have created a unique and beautiful abode surrounded by the prestigious vines of the Médoc peninsula.
Architects and interior designers were called in from Bordeaux for this ambitious project, always ensuring the château’s heritage was preserved whilst adding a wealth of 21st-century detail with sustainability at the forefront of their minds.
Now, as you walk through the living spaces of this stunning home, you can admire its stylish interiors alongside impressive features including sound systems, high-end speakers and a video projector with Prime, Netflix and Apple TV. The semi-professional kitchen is a cook’s dream and meals can be served in the elegant dining room making the most of the tableware from Milan, or outside on the shady upper terrace. The lounge is the place to kick back with a glass of Premier cru classé listening to music on the record player.
The three bedrooms are just as gorgeous with no expense spared – guests can expect king-size double beds with hotel quality natural bedlinen, as well as Dyson hairdryers, organic local beauty products and Italian marble sinks in their private bath or shower rooms. The château even has its own personalised scent, created by the owners’ favourite London based perfume maker who trained in Paris and Grasse.
It’s all about embracing the authenticity of the setting outside in the 3.5 acres of gardens bordered by vineyards. Relax on the Italian designer furnishings surrounding the 15m long natural swimming pool, enjoy a picnic on the expansive lawns and gaze over the trees towards the Gironde estuary from the upper terrace beside the Weber barbecue.
In some ways it feels you are off the beaten track, yet there is so much to draw you into this part of south-western France. Potter along to the small local village with its wineries and restaurant and sample oysters, charcuterie, cheese and wine by the village’s oyster shack open in July and August, close to the banks of the Gironde.
Taste some of the finest wines in the world as you visit châteaux such as Mouton-Rothschild, Latour and Château Beychevelle alongside many family-run wineries near Pauillac, Margaux and beyond. Dine in gourmet restaurants and soak up the atmosphere of bustling markets in this region known for its gastronomy as well as its wine.
Then of course there’s the ocean! Spend the day in Soulac-sur-Mer with its Belle Époque ambience and sweeping Atlantic beaches perfect for sunbathing and surfing. Hire bikes to cycle through the pine forests and dunes of this wonderful peninsula or discover the scenery on horseback. Enjoy nature walks and watersports around Lac d'Hourtin-Carcans and Étang de Lacanau, two of France’s largest lakes.
With impressive wines, beaches, lakes and forests, not to mention the vibrant city of Bordeaux within an easy day trip, there is so much to experience across the captivating Médoc peninsula.
Surrounded by vineyards so typical of this region, Château Beau Médoc can be found on the edge of a small rural village on the Médoc peninsula, a short stroll to the banks of the Gironde estuary and a 90-minute drive from Bordeaux.
You can stroll into the small village where there is a restaurant overlooking the Gironde (check for seasonal opening times and dates). If staying in July and August, look out for the popular oyster hut within a 15-minute walk where you can enjoy a plate of oysters, charcuterie or local cheeses alongside wine. Further amenities including a supermarket and more restaurants can be found 11km away in Lesparre-Médoc.
Across the Médoc peninsula, wine-lovers have a range of wonderful vineyards to visit within a short drive from small family-run wineries to prestigious wine châteaux including Mouton-Rothschild, Latour and Château Beychevelle. The wine-town of Margaux (52km) is under an hour by car whilst charming Pauillac (23km) is even closer. Nearby Saint-Estèphe (14km) is home to an excellent restaurant and Saint-Vivien-de-Médoc (20km) hosts one of the best local markets. Enjoy all sorts of delicious specialities across this region including fresh mussels, oysters, foie gras and garlic, accompanied of course by some of the best wines in the world.
The stunning Atlantic beaches of the Médoc peninsula are also within easy reach – Soulac-sur-Mer and Montalivet les Bains are around half an hour by car whilst Lacanau, famous for its surfing, is a 55km drive. Discover wonderful horse-riding and cycling trails by the sand dunes and pine forests of the peninsula’s Atlantic coastline, following part of La Vélodyssée which extends all the way to Arcachon Bay.
Lac d'Hourtin-Carcans is France’s largest freshwater lake with such fascinating biodiversity alongside lakeside beaches and seasonal water-based activities. Étang de Lacanau is yet another idyllic spot for walks, hikes, cycle rides, fishing and boating.
For a complete change of scene, you could also spend the day in Bordeaux (75km) with its magnificent sights, restaurants, wine bars, boat trips and the highly regarded wine museum, La Cité du Vin.

N.S.
Chateau Beau Medoc was a wonderful place to spend our holiday. The house is in a stunning setting, looking outwards the Gironde river, and has been restored lovingly and beautifully. We spent most of our time in the garden (including a vegetable plot where we picked fresh tomatoes and courgettes) and swimming pool (which has variable depth settings), or on the decking which floats out in front of the house, elevated above the pool. The kitchen is one of the best equipped we have ever been in, which made cooking together in the evenings fun. Good audio visual set up with record player/hi fi and screen/projector. Extremely responsive owners who have also carefully prepared lots of helpful information, and daily visits from a delightful housekeeper. Nice extras if you want to purchase them include drinks and cocktails, and some local specialities in the kitchen and the bathrooms. The surroundings are relaxing - lovely beaches on the Atlantic coast and vineyards and villages nearby. Supermarket in the nearby town with everything needed to take advantage of the fabulous kitchen, or restaurants if you want to avoid that.
