About this property

Rouge Cottage is the perfect place to stay for a relaxing and peaceful holiday in a pretty French cottage with a private, heated pool and stunning views over the charming countryside of the Limousin region.

At the end of a quiet hamlet on a no through road, Rouge Cottage stands in a beautifully panoramic and rural spot which oozes tranquility. Perfect for families or couples wanting to get away from it all and spend time together in privacy.

A private heated pool with stunning views makes this cottage very special. There is also a magnificent castle tree house for the children to enjoy.

The cottage is petite and cosy with everything you need to make it a holiday to remember. It is decorated in a simple and homely way with individual touches and attention to detail, as well as features such as exposed chestnut beams which give it character and charm.

Two bedrooms upstairs (one double and a triple) and a shower room with a separate toilet. Downstairs it is open plan and contains all you need for cooking and relaxing. A wood burner heats the cottage and makes it cosy in the cooler months.

Outside there are sunbeds by the pool with a view over the fields of Limousin cattle. There are various seating areas with an outdoor sofa by the pool and chairs on the back terrace, perfect to watch the sun go down with a glass of wine. Table and chairs with a large umbrella to the front of the cottage and barn provide you with a great seating area outdoors to enjoy your meals on warm sunny days. In the barn there is a table tennis table that may be used inside or out.

Supermarkets can be found locally 10 minutes from the cottage. Five minutes away in either direction there is a boulangerie, butchers and restaurant and within only 15 minutes there are two Michelin star restaurants. There are plenty of markets in all the surrounding towns and villages where you can buy fantastic fresh, local produce.

Three swimming lakes are all within 10 minutes of Rouge Cottage with sandy beaches, cafès and tennis courts. At ‘Espace Hermeline’ in Bussiere- Galant, there is swimming, tennis, velorail, a high ropes course, children’s park, crazy golf and more.

The Limousin is wonderful to explore with its rich history and beautiful countryside. Often overlooked and bypassed, the Haute Vienne offers you the perfect piece of rural France to enjoy a family holiday full of relaxation, good food, culture and memories.

The Haute Vienne oozes history with plenty of Chateaux to visit and many within cycling distance of Rouge Cottage. Chalus is only 10 minutes away, where Richard the Lion heart was fatally wounded by a cross bow bolt. 5km from Rouge Cottage is Chateaux Lastours where in the holidays they hold medieval festivals for all the family. Jumilhac Le Grand is an impressive fairy tale château for any younger princesses and knights to explore.

The roads in this region are quiet and safe due to it being the least populated region in France. This makes it a great place to cycle whether you are ‘en famille’ or into clocking up miles on clean well-made roads. Many of the professional teams use the Limousin as a training ground because of the standard of road surface and climate.

There are many local fishing lakes to choose from if you would like to go fishing for the day.

Haute-Vienne is a department in the Limousin region of France. Named after the Vienne River, it borders the departments of Creuse and Corrèze (also in Limousin), Dordogne to the south in Aquitaine, Charente and Vienne to the west in Poitou-Charentes, and Indre to the north in the Centre department.

The Parc Naturel Regional Perigord-Limousin is an 1800km2 park that straddles the Dordogne-Limousin border, and takes in parts of Haute-Vienne and Dordogne.

There is a wealth of nature, culture, food and activities to explore. Below are just a few possibilities!

Whether you are into the history of Richard the Lion Heart and are keen to follow his route and visit some chateaux or just enjoy the local produce markets and amazing local French food and wine on offer.

There is something for everyone from walking and cycling to fishing or swimming and soaking up the local French culture.

There are numerous walking paths right from the door at Rouge Cottage through the glorious Limousin countryside, which is beautiful right throughout the year.

There are great cycling routes to suit all abilities, particularly the more casual cyclist and families. The roads in the Haute Vienne are smooth and well-maintained, perfect for clocking up some training miles. Each year big name teams arrive for the Tour du Limousin that takes over the region, with spectators lining the route to catch a glimpse of riders. There is also much to offer mountain bikers, with plenty of great dirt tracks and byways. The marked paths around Courbefy are fantastic to explore with steady technical descents. They are a great introduction to mountain biking for novices and would-be off-roaders, but still challenging enough to give the more experienced rider a blast of adrenaline.

Family cycling – Haute-Vienne has some superb places for families to go cycling. The quiet, well maintained roads offer a wonderful way for families to explore the local area. Whether it is heading off for a picnic or cycling to a Chateaux, there are numerous destinations to get to within easy cycling distance from the cottage. From Chalus to Orador–sur-Vayres there is a 13km ride on the old railway line, which is perfect for all members of the family.

Bikes can be hired in Chalus ask at the tourist office.

Rouge cottage is situated in absolutely tranquil surroundings, and was the perfect base for our exploration of the Limousin/Perigord region, at the end of May 2024. From Rouge Cottage the outlook over undulating woodland and pasture is very attractive. We very much appreciated the chorus of frogs at dusk in the nearby ponds and the aerial bat displays! The accommodation is beautifully furnished, exceptionally comfortable and very well equipped. It provides an extremely relaxing and restorative atmosphere. We would wholeheartedly recommend Rouge Cottage, and look forward to revisiting in the summer months when the lovely pool is available to guests.

We had a lovely relaxing week in April at Rouge Cottage. The facilities and games on offer were great however we only realised after booking that the swimming pool (heated) would only be open from June. This needed to be much clearer on the Olivers website as we were expecting to have a nice warm pool, even if the weather was a bit cooler in April. We discovered the local area and found some lovely historic villages as well as a great little takeaway pizzeria in a nearby town. Although the cottage seemed to be out in the middle of knowhere with great views and peace and quiet, there was a selection of shops and supermarkets within 15-20 minutes. Thanks you to Constance, the owner for keeping in touch before our arrival and making suggestions of places to visit and walks to do and thanks to Charlene for keeping the cottage nice and clean.
