Just 30 minutes from the storybook ramparts of Carcassonne and its international airport, the cottage offers rural simplicity without being too isolated. There is a restaurant on the edge of the village, while Limoux, around 20 minutes away, offers a full range of shops, bakeries and excellent restaurants – try its excellent sparkling white win.

Following the country roads north, just 20 minutes away lies the village of Arzens, where you can stock up on fresh pastries at the bakery. For everyday essentials and a livelier atmosphere, the bustling town of Limoux (13.5km) offers everything you might need – from supermarkets and boutiques to cafés and a lively weekly market. Renowned for its sparkling wine, Blanquette de Limoux, this riverside town is a must for wine lovers, with tasting rooms and vineyard tours set among picturesque hills.
A 30-minute drive brings you to the fairytale citadel of Carcassonne (20km), one of France’s most extraordinary medieval landmarks. Wander through its double-walled fortress, explore ancient ramparts and dine in atmospheric courtyards, before enjoying a tranquil stroll or bike ride along the nearby Canal du Midi – a unesco World Heritage site lined with plane trees and stone bridges.
Venture further afield to discover the enchanting town of Mirepoix (35km), with its half-timbered arcades and colourful market square. Brimming with history and charm, it’s a wonderful place to spend a day browsing artisan stalls, enjoying a glass of wine or simply soaking up the medieval ambience. Its Monday morning market is one of the loveliest in the region.
Wine-tasting is a real highlight across the area, with numerous domaines offering tastings of local reds, whites and sparkling wines, many within a short drive of the house.
