In the charming village of Saint-Marcel-sur-Aude, Maison Brassens places you amid the beauty of southern France’s Aude region, just 11km from Narbonne and half an hour from the Mediterranean’s sandy beaches. Both Carcassonne and Bézier Airports are around an hour by car.

The village itself brims with authentic local life and all essential amenities within a short stroll: a superb restaurant, café-bar, pizzeria, bakery, grocery store, pharmacy and several wine outlets. Two supermarkets are close at hand (one in the village, the other just outside) while Narbonne offers a broader range of shops and hypermarkets just 15 to 20 minutes away by car. 

This is an ideal base for exploring the captivating Canal du Midi, with the postcard-perfect hamlet of Le Somail (3.5km) just a short distance by car or bike. Set along the canal, Le Somail is home to a cluster of lovely restaurants, some by the canalside, and a few charming shops, including an épicerie floating on a barge. For further canal-side discovery, the pretty village of Homps (20km) is worthy of a visit, close to Olonzac (19km) with its Tuesday morning market and Lac de Jouarres for summer water-based activities.

Wine lovers will be in their element, as the surrounding landscape is dotted with vineyards and welcoming domaines offering tastings of the region’s excellent Minervois and Corbières wines. A scenic drive north leads to the ancient village of Minerve (21km), dramatically perched above deep limestone gorges and steeped in Cathar history.

For beach days, the golden sands of Narbonne-Plage (29km) and Saint-Pierre-la-Mer (31km) beckon, or head to Gruissan (30km), famed for its round layout, seafood and atmospheric stilted beach houses made famous in the French film Betty Blue.

History and culture lie just beyond the doorstep: Narbonne’s Roman heritage, lively market halls, and cathedral are just a short drive away, while the awe-inspiring citadel of Carcassonne, with its fairytale turrets and summer festivals, is around 52km from the village. The broader region is rich with historical intrigue, following the Cathar trail south toward the Spanish border, where dramatic castles and timeworn hilltop villages await exploration.
