Attractions and nearby amenities

Cephalonia is home to some breathtakingly rugged Mediterranean scenery, as well as glorious sandy beaches, Byzantine churches and small fishing villages.

To the north, the island is mountainous and rocky, and you’ll find a number of secluded beaches. The harbour villages of Fiskardo is a must-see, as it was one of the few places that wasn’t affected by the earthquake of 1953, so you can still see traditional and historic architecture here.

To the south, the landscape is less rugged and has a covering of olive, cypress, orange and lemon trees. The island remains largely unspoilt and hasn’t succumbed to mass tourism.

Minia and Ames are small, quiet resorts located about 10kms south of the capital Argostoli. They both have small, sandy beaches, and you’ll find a mini-market and a couple of tavernas in Ames. Before you stop for lunch, why not explore some of the sandy coves along the coastline from Ames?

One of the most popular destinations on Cephalonia is only 8kms away. Makris Yialos is known by locals and tourists for its glorious sandy beach. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can hire out water sports equipment here.

Lassi is the largest beach resort on Cephalonia and is just 8kms away. It’s very popular with families, and you’ll find plenty of shops to browse in, as well as a number of restaurants offering local, fresh dishes.
