About this property

Villa Nerello is a stylish home sleeping 16 guests located on the doorstep of Europe’s most active volcano, Etna.

The country abode, set in 15 acres of extensive land dates back to the 19th century and was previously a working home – the owners lived upstairs in the main house, and wine was produced in the Palmento downstairs, using grapes from the surrounding vineyards. Today, guests are welcome to sample the local wines kept downstairs in what has now become a wine cellar.

Whilst the current owners have retained the original features of this farmhouse, the villa has been lovingly converted into a contemporary home with stylish, design-led interiors. Seven bedrooms are split between the main home and the two annexes – formally used as accommodation for the animals and staff – and now form an idyllic base for families and groups of friends holidaying together on the east coast of Sicily.

The hub of Villa Nerello is the spacious living room in the main house with its modern and comfortable seating and dining area – the perfect spot to relax after a day exploring the local area or basking in the sunshine by the outdoor pool, or to enjoy a home cooked meal prepared in the colourfully-tiled kitchen.

Alternatively, guests can make use of the outdoor kitchen and barbecue and dine al-fresco under the gazebo with extra-ordinary views of Mount Etna. These breath-taking views can also be admired from the infinity pool or relaxing on one of the loungers – it’s hard to miss!

And when it’s time to recharge your batteries, you can retreat to the two ensuite bedrooms in the main villa or retire to the annexes with two and three bedrooms respectively – the larger of the annexes also features a fully-equipped kitchen.

The nearest village is 2.5km away from Villa Nerello and Castiglione di Sicilia is also close by (7km), with shops and restaurants on offer. Etna is a must visit during your stay, along with Taormina (35km), Giardini Naxos (26km), Catania (53km) and, further away, Syracuse (120km).

The local area is a favourite for trekking, walking and cycling. Active guests shouldn’t miss the opportunity to take a guided tour (with varying options of difficulty) up Europe’s most active volcano and unesco World Heritage Site, Mount Etna with incredible views from its summit. For keen golfers, Il Picciolo Golf Club (8km), an 18-hole golf course is just a 15-minute drive from the villa, and there are also places to go horse riding nearby.

Wine lovers will appreciate being in the heart of the Etna DOC wines region. Many of the local wineries offer tours and wine tasting as part of the Etna wine routes. Food lovers should visit Bronte (35km), known for producing pistachios and is full of great places to eat.

The closest village is Rovittello just 2.5km away, with a small grocery shop and a local restaurant. The hilltop village Castiglione di Sicilia (7km) is also close by, with further places to eat and drink, and supermarkets to stock up on essentials. Randazzo (17km), has a medieval past and religious gothic architecture and is the closest town to the summit of Etna. It is known as the ‘black town’ for its buildings made of black lava blocks giving the town its unique character.

Like Etna, the elegant town of Taormina (35km) is also well worth a visit for its clifftop panoramas of the Mediterranean. It is also known for its ancient Greek theatre and beautiful Isola Bella beach. Take the cable car from the beach to the old town for fantastic views both out to sea and inland towards Etna. There are plenty of opportunities for shopping and wining and dining alongside the historic streets.

Giardini Naxos (26km) is another beach spot with white sands and crystal-clear water, making it a picturesque and popular option with tourists.

An hour away by car is the ancient city port of Catania (53km) with its pretty piazzas, Baroque Palazzo Biscari and the Monastery of San Benedetto. A little further, Syracuse (120km) is also a great day out for those interested in Greek and Roman history. Another unesco site, Syracuse was home to Archimedes – the engineer and mathematician, and it’s landmarks include the Necropolis of Pantalica.

Very kind host, helping and when we asked him something, he was quickly reacting. Great, wonderful villa, on a very beautiful place with separate lodges. But with a dinning table and kitchen for all of us. A great swimming pool. Near the Etna.
