About this property

Looking out over the verdant hills of Umbria, towards Lake Trasimeno, Villa Destino enjoys an idyllic setting where you can spend lazy days in the beautiful countryside. The home is located in a small village, while the picturesque town of Castiglione del Lago is also easy to reach at just 6km away. If you wish to explore Umbria and neighbouring Tuscany with a larger group, this charming, historic home can sleep up to 20 guests.

Villa Destino is spread over three floors and has plenty of space to accommodate a larger family or a big group of friends. As you approach the house, you will see a pretty brick exterior with shuttered windows and terracotta roof tiles. The home is very typical of this area and fits in perfectly with the quaint village and patchwork of ancient fields around the house.

As you step inside, you will find a traditional farmhouse style home with tiled floors, exposed brick work and beamed ceilings. Each room is decorated in a neutral colour palette which adds a touch of modernity to this centuries-old villa and works in harmony with the antique furnishings and open-fireplaces to create a warm and welcoming place to stay.

The living and dining room is open-plan so your whole group can come together in the evenings to spend some quality time having drinks, in the winter months you could even light a cosy fire. The kitchen here is vast and professionally equipped, so whether you are doing the cooking or you opt to hire a chef for a few special meals, you will have all of the appliances and crockery you could require.

The villa has two more floors where the eight double bedrooms are to be discovered, each of these has a comfortable bed, overlooks the gorgeous garden and boasts an en-suite bathroom, so you are sure to get a great night’s sleep.

Larger parties will also have use of the attached annexe building which has two more bedrooms and a lovely living and dining room, with a kitchen and bathrooms of its own. Alternatively, if you are travelling in a small group, you could choose to hire just this smaller villa.

Outside, especially for the guests that like to cook there is an herb garden and you will be welcome to forage through the fruit trees and, depending on the season, you will find apples, pomegranates, plums (suzini), figs, walnuts, passion fruits. Guests have full access to the huge garden and grounds where you can dine al-fresco, swim in the pool or head out on your morning run.

When you wish to go out for the day or would like to tuck in to a delicious dinner in a lively town square, the town of Castiglione del Lago is only a short drive away. This walled, medieval town is a fabulous place to visit for the day and also offers lots of amenities. If you would like to visit a beach, or walk the ancient mule trails, Lake Trasimeno is just next to the town and is one of the area’s best-loved attractions.

Lying in sleepy Umbrian farmland, just a stone’s throw away from the Tuscan border, you will find Villa Destino. This welcoming, traditional home has a wealth of space and can sleep up to 20 people, so whether you are travelling to Italy for a family holiday or an intimate wedding, this is the perfect house for you, in a wonderful location.

Just a short stroll from the home, is the centre of a little village which offers a shop, a bar and a church. This is a location where you will feel like part of the local community, while being able to reach plenty of stunning towns and tourist attractions with ease.

One of the closest, larger towns is Castiglione del Lago which is 6km away and sits on a promontory looking out over the calm waters of Lake Trasimeno. The town we see today is medieval, though the origins lie in the Etruscan era. Emperor Frederick Barbarossa had much of the original town rebuilt when the staggering castle Castello del Leone was constructed in the 13th century. You are able to explore the castle today and the walls which wrap around the city. In the grounds of the castle there is also an ancient church and an open-air theatre. A great place to start wandering around the town is the Palazzo del Comune, a lovely square with Renaissance style buildings.

There is lots to keep you busy in town, so you are likely to visit a number of times. Some of the attractions include, the Palazzo della Corgna which is an ornately decorated 16th century palace, the exquisite town hall and of course the castle. You will also find countless artisan shops, cafes and restaurants lining the streets. Just outside of the walls, visitors can access three of the nine beaches which surround Lake Trasimeno, and also board ferries to the little islands on the lake and for scenic boat trips. Sports enthusiasts can also access hiking routes from here and take part in water sports.

If you would like to spend the day in the neighbouring region of Tuscany, the town of Montepulciano is a brilliant choice. Just 22km away by car, Montepulciano is a unique place which is known as a spa town. While here you can soak in the thermal waters of natural springs, either in outdoor public pools or by booking a day at one of the luxury spas here which also offer treatments such as facials and massages. The town is also set within the heart of Tuscany’s wine growing area and you could visit a vineyard while here or take part in a wine tasting in town. The town centre itself is incredible, with over 1500 years of history and impressive architecture.

If you do not mind driving a little further, you could also visit the amazing cities of Arezzo (60km away) or Siena (78km away) which are both worth the trip!

From the moment we prepared for our stay, Suzette was a great host and attentive to our needs. Because of this, we felt right at home as soon as we arrived. Villa Destino sits on a hillside near Castiglione del Lago, which can be seen from the porch. The large trees on the terrace, the unobstructed view around, the pool below as the entire estate immediately immerse you in the Dolce Vita unique to Tuscany and Umbria. The rooms are large, well appointed and make it possible to accommodate large groups. The professional kitchen is a real plus and makes it possible to cook a wide range of different recipes. The pool below is easily accessible and will bring you the necessary freshness under the Italian sun. We spent a full week there with a group of 18 and will be happy to come back. Thank you!

We liked the proximity to the villages Montalcino and Montepulciano. The Villa was very beautiful and what to say about the experience of the chef at home for our daughter's birthday, WoW, an evening to remember. Wonderful stay in Tuscany.
