Enveloped by olive groves, pine trees, and endless rolling hills in Umbria’s green heart, Villa Colabella is a stunning four-bedroom home. If you wish to experience authentic rural Italy but do not want to miss out on high-end accommodation, then this is a fantastic place to stay for a trip with friends or family.
This spacious stone home is set over 2 floors. On the ground floor, there is a fully-fitted kitchen, a cosy living room complete with a fireplace and comfortable sofas and a stunning dining room where you can enjoy a meal as a group. One bedroom can also be found on this floor: a large room with a four-poster bed and a modern bathroom with a relaxing roll-top bath. The other 3 bedrooms are equally lovely and are situated upstairs; all are en-suite and offer incredible views.
With the fantastic climate and panoramic vistas, you are sure to want to spend a lot of time outdoors. The garden here is a little oasis filled with lush planting and lawns. The covered dining area is ideal for a candlelit Italian feast after a day of swimming in the private pool and reading a good book under the shade of a tree. The house is situated in a rural area, perfect for a relaxing break where you can truly get away from it all and explore the local countryside and walking trails.
When you need some groceries or want to pop out for a coffee, a few villages and hamlets are dotted around within a 5km radius. If you are looking for a wider choice of places to eat and shop, then why not visit the hilltop town of Monte Santa Maria Tiberina, which is 10km away? The Etruscans settled the town, but it is also filled with medieval buildings which line the narrow streets, and fortresses adorn the top of the hill. The town also holds numerous festivals and processions throughout the year. You will often see something happening in the main piazza, including food festivals where you can try local delicacies such as truffles and chestnuts.
Even larger is the bustling city of Città di Castello, which is a 15 km drive from the villa. Umbria’s capital, Perugia, is a must-visit location and is 55km away by car. If you want to visit the beach, then head over to Lake Trasimeno, which has many lake beaches and is 50km away.
This idyllic stone house is located in the verdant farmland of Umbria, not far from the border with Tuscany. It would make a fantastic base for a holiday with terrific food, country walks, and countless charming towns and villages to discover.
Wake up every day to the sounds of the native wildlife as you sip your morning coffee while taking in the staggeringly beautiful views on offer from the house and garden. This area is perfect for complete relaxation and spending time in nature, whether walking, cycling, horse riding or even sampling wine at a local vineyard.
A few villages less than 5km from the villa have small shops and several restaurants. Monte Santa Maria Tiberina is a bigger town with shops, restaurants, cafés, bars, and historical sites. The town is just 10km away from the house and is perched on a hilltop, which was once a valuable location for protecting the citizens from invasion. The castle at the very top of the hill is a great place to visit; it was built in 1250 and later expanded by the Bourbon del Monte Marquises, who ruled over this area until 1815! Today, you can explore the castle but also visit the museum to learn more about the family and see some artefacts found in recent archaeological digs. There are also some beautiful ancient churches you can pop into as you wander around. For a small town, there is an array of tasty food available, so make sure to stop off for lunch at a little family-run café or visit during one of the many food festivals.
Città di Castello is another place to add to your itinerary, and the city is only 15km away from Villa Colabella. A lovely way to learn about the city is by booking a walking tour, which will show you around the Renaissance-era walls and palace-lined squares like the Piazza Gabriotti. If you prefer to explore by yourself, then the charming cobbled streets are easy to navigate on foot, and there are medieval churches, a 1000-year-old cathedral, galleries, and museums to keep your group busy. Art lovers will love visiting the home of artist Alberto Burri, who lived here, and you can also view his work in the local galleries.
Perugia is 55km away and well worth the drive, which takes less than an hour. Head out early to make the most of this gorgeous city, which is the capital of Umbria. Start in the main square, the Piazza IV Novembre, and then visit artisan shops and cultural attractions such as the National Gallery. The imposing 13th-century Palazzo dei Priori is a must-see and is one of Italy’s finest medieval palaces, constructed uniquely from pink stone. If you are more of a foodie, why not drive slightly out of the city centre and visit the home of a local cook where you can take part in cookery classes? Get stuck into making soups, pasta and desserts guided by a friendly Perugian host. Food lovers will also be happy to know that Perugia is known for chocolate, and you can visit a fantastic chocolate factory!
