This fabulous, five-bedroom villa sits on the east coast of Madeira in Caniçal, and has ample space for a family or group of friends. Surrounded by lush palm trees, and sea and mountain views, Casa Boal is a light and beautiful place.

There’s a fantastic games room on the lower ground floor where you can rack up a game of billiards, and a handy laundry room for washing and drying clothes. But the ground floor is where it all takes place. The living areas and bedrooms are all located on this level giving the property a sense of fluidity. Whitewashed walls, wooden-panelled flooring and modern furnishings create a tranquil ambience, and it won’t be long before you’re relaxing on the huge sectional sofa and staring through the floor-to-ceiling glass doors at the endless blue sky and equally blue sea. There’s also a sleek dining table, seating eight people, for sociable evening meals. The rear kitchen is kitted out with every modern appliance you’ll need for a comfortable stay including microwave, coffee machine and refrigerator, and there’s also a small breakfast table, perfect for a casual bite to eat.

Two separate corridors lead off from the open-plan living area to the five bedrooms featuring a mix of single and double beds. There are also five bathrooms with baths. The bedrooms are all light and airy and adorned with fresh, modern furnishings but with the natural light flooding through the windows and the alluring swimming pool glistening in the sunshine, you’ll want to head outside. Bask in the sun by the pool, snooze in a hammock on the balcony or take it easy with a good book on the neat lawn. Do exactly what you want here, as the casa is the perfect place to unwind. Come lunchtime, gather in the back garden, throw some fish on the barbeque and feast al fresco at the wooden table.

Casa Boal is ideally placed for those who want tranquillity and is also conveniently located within walking distance to a sandy beach and several pretty cafes. For further amenities, it’s just a 10-minute drive to Caniçal with its harbour and seafront walks, supermarkets and delicious fresh fish restaurants.

Casa Boal is set in the family-friendly neighbourhood of Caniçal, a little fishing village with several beautiful beaches and a colourful harbour dotted with fishermen’s boats. From the casa it’s just a 10-minute drive to the centre of town and a short walk to Prainha do Caniçal beach. Hidden in a beautiful cove, it’s a black sand beach with clear and clam waters making it a peaceful place to swim. Afterwards, you can enjoy a bite to eat at the beachside snack bar. Another nearby beach worth a visit is Ribeira de Natal, a pebble beach with crystal clear waters. It’s the perfect beach for swimming, snorkelling and diving. After a dip in the sea take a walk along the promenade towards Caniçal centre and enjoy a bite to eat at one of the many fine restaurants serving fresh fish and shellfish. There’s also a beach complex in Caniçal featuring a swimming pool and inviting sun loungers.

While the coastline offers some great beaches, inland there are some fabulous hiking trails. Be sure to visit the Ponta de São Lourenço in Caniçal, it’s one of Madeira’s largest nature reserves and has a 3km footpath that offers walkers stunning views, and plenty of wildlife. You can also explore the nature reserve from the sea with plenty of experts offering kayaking, snorkelling and sailing trips.

But for even better views, drive 10-minutes west from the casa to Pico do Facho. Here you’ll be rewarded with stunning vistas of Machico, the island of Porto Santo and even Pico Ruivo, Madeira’s highest peak at 1,862 metres. Those with a head for heights can also head to the nearby viewpoint of Ponta do Rosto. Here you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views of the whole island.

Caniçal was once the centre of Madeira’s whaling industry but whaling in Madeira stopped in 1981 and now it’s illegal to kill the whales, dolphins and seals. If you want to learn about the island’s history of whaling, make sure you stop at the Whaling Museum in the village where you can explore life-like whale models, gruesome harpoons, 3D films and various interactive exhibits.
