About this property

Just a short drive from the historic town of Santarém, Casa Filipa is a relaxed family-friendly villa and a fantastic base for exploring Lisbon, Belém, and Portugal’s western coastline. Set within spacious gardens with a private pool and tennis court, the villa offers the perfect blend of outdoor living and traditional comfort.

A classic casa ribatejana, Casa Filipa retains its local architectural charm, with light, unfussy interiors and plenty of space for up to nine guests. The four bedrooms are simply styled and practical, including a twin room ideal for children. The kitchen is well-equipped for home cooking, while the open-plan living and dining areas offer a natural flow that suits easygoing group stays.

Patio doors open out onto sunny terraces, where adults can unwind and children can play within view. Gather around the large dining table inside, or enjoy relaxed barbecue dinners in the garden. Whether you’re dipping into the pool, playing a casual game of tennis, or sampling local wine under the parasol, Casa Filipa makes it easy to settle in and slow down.

*** Please note that the house is old, and some parts of the property have not been reformed. There is also a cat on the property.

Casa Filipa is located just a few kilometres from the charming town of Santarém, known as the Gothic capital. With Lisbon just a 45-minute drive away and the popular towns of Fatima, Foz do Arelho and Peniche only 30 minutes away.

The fascinating nearby Santarém offers visitors a great insight into a town once renowned as the strongest fortress in the kingdom! Its origins can be traced back to the Iron Age, and its cultural events and celebrations still attract large crowds today – including the ‘Feira de Ribatejo’, a 10-day agricultural fair abound with folk dancing, bullfights, bull-running and stalls of local produce!

Portugal itself is a small, fascinating country at the most Western point of mainland Europe. The capital, Lisbon, is known for its lively nightlife, with endless bars and clubs full of fun-loving locals and tourists alike, but also has plenty of fascinating history (check out Belém, jam-packed with monuments!) and undulating terrain, famously termed the ‘city of the seven hills’.

With a vast coastline that meets the mighty Atlantic Ocean, Portugal is a real paradise for the keen surfer, or indeed even those looking to try it for the first time, with plenty of surfing schools all along the calmer sections of the coast. Of course, it is not only the world-famous waves but also the utterly pollution-free water, and the lack of deadly sharks found in warmer areas that put it so firmly on the map as the surfing Mecca of the world.

And even for those less keen on the idea of surfing, the beaches of Portugal are well worth a visit for their beautifully clear waters, and almost all have a bar at which you can enjoy a tipple. Other active pursuits include a sublime cycling trip through the undulating and picturesque scenery of Geres, or indeed white-water rafting on the river Douro!

Alternatively, a scenic hike through the Natural Reserve of Peneda-Gerês, the Douro Valley and Serra da Estrela will allow you a real up close and personal experience with all kinds of wildlife. For those more into the gentle pace of golf, Portugal is a real haven, with 14 of the world’s top 100 best golf courses!

First and foremost, this is a lovely villa. Inside it is really spacious (even more so than the photos suggest), outside is lovely - the pool is larger and deeper than we'd expected. The house is beautifully furnished, and has a large, superbly-equipped kitchen. The owners kindly left tennis racquets and balls for the court, and this was much appreciated. However, considering what a great property this is, we were surprised by a few things that weren't quite up to scratch and would have been easy to remedy, thus making this a really 5-star experience. Firstly, there were 6 of us staying, and not enough sun loungers for one each; also, there were 6 beach towels laid out for us which, for a whole-week stay, was not enough. We had trouble with the outside lights during our stay (the housekeeper was v helpful, but the way the switches kept tripping did not feel v secure at all), and this needs some looking at. The bed mattresses were incredibly hard, even for those of us who normally appreciate a firm mattress. The main thing that could be improved is some better information - both beforehand, and perhaps a brief 'user guide' at the property (telling us, eg, where to put rubbish when we emptied the bins). We stopped at a supermarket on the way from the airport to save time, and it would have been really helpful to know that we needed basic items like loo roll, surface cleaner, kitchen roll, and coals for the barbecue - we'd expect to top up all these things, of course, but thought there might be enough for our first night and day. There were 5 dishwasher tablets - again, not nearly enough for 6 people staying a whole week. It would have been really helpful to know what's there, and what's not. Finally, we were unnerved by the cleaning lady just appearing several times during the week. She seemed to be just popping in and having a look around (once during our meal time). She spoke no english, and we no portuguese, so it was quite awkward. We feel there should have been some warning, at least, that she was going to show up. We were also unhappy that she and a colleague turned up to clean at 8am on the final day (checkout is 10am); this hampered our packing and our own cleaning, and she was clearly annoyed that we were still there. We put this down to some miscommunication (ie that checkout was at 10am), and it would be good if this might be rectified for future occupants. All in all, a really lovely property, and we had a great time. With just a few easy amendments, it would be spectacular. We were grateful for the opportunity to stay here.
