A superbly furnished, light, 4-bedroom holiday home, Villa Carambola lies just 2km from Calonge on Spain’s Costa Brava. Suitable for up to eight guests, this attractive villa is close to the mountainous countryside and a beautiful stretch of coast and features a private pool and terrace. Sitting beside this kidney-shaped swimming pool, the cosy house is ideally placed for enjoying this region’s wonderful beaches and many attractions. On its furnished terrace, you have spaces for dining and relaxing, with a barbecue, sun loungers and a covered area for some shade.
Step inside, and there’s a serene feeling to the main living area, with its white and neutral decor and comfy furniture. As well as large sofas, you have a TV with satellite channels, a fireplace, a rustic dining table and chairs, and a well-equipped kitchen – all part of the same open-plan space. The kitchen provides you with everything you will need, including a dishwasher, coffee machine, and microwave. The four bedrooms are set across the two upper floors; on the first floor, you have a double bedroom and two twin rooms, alongside a bathroom. On the floor above, there’s another double, along with access to the upper terrace. All bedrooms are air-conditioned for your comfort.
Many local amenities, including bars, restaurants, and a supermarket, lie within 2km of the house. Calonge is an attractive coastal town with many family attractions, including a water park and a medieval castle. Beautiful beaches like Sant Antoni and Roques Planes enjoy wonderful views and are sure to tempt you. Just a short drive south of Calonge, Platja d’Aro offers lots more fun for kids with an amusement park, skate park, and multiplex cinema. To experience the natural beauty of the coast, head north to the pretty Jardins de Cap Roig or south to the magnificent Cadiretes nature reserve.
The area of Catalonia extending north of Barcelona has no shortage of beach resorts and attractive coastal hideaways to uncover. Large towns such as Badalona and Mataro later give way to smaller but much-loved locations like Llafranc and Begur, giving this stretch of the Costa Brava a satisfying level of variety. What lies inland is also positively rewarding. With a landscape dominated by mountainous regions like Montseny and the Cadiretes, it would be a shame not to take some time away from the beach to enjoy some incredible scenery either on foot or by bike. The latter area extends as far as the coast north of Tossa de Mar, offering the perfect opportunity to combine the two.
One of Catalonia’s most impressive historic cities lies around 35 minutes driving north of here – Girona. Whether it’s to view the Arab Baths, the record-breaking wide nave of the Catedral de Santa María or the coloured houses lining the River Onyar, you are assured of an inspiring visit. Girona is also home to Catalonia’s largest urban park, Devesa, a wonderful green oasis in the heart of the city. For something a little more rugged, the mountains of Montseny are a vast playground for hikers and climbers. Richly diverse in terms of landscape and climate, this vast natural area is one of the region’s must-sees. To the south, the smaller Parc del Montnegre i el Corredor offers a relaxing outdoor environment that’s well suited to walking.
Along the coast to the east of this area, a number of attractive towns make for appealing excursions, such as Arenys de Mar, with its eye-catching historic buildings and pretty harbour. North-west of Barcelona, the city of Terrassa provides an alternative angle on Catalonia. This important industrial city boasts some impressive architecture in the form of the Modernist Masia Freixa and Mercat de la Independència central market. Its National Museum of Science and Technology also offers visitors an intriguing overview of more recent developments.
