A fantastic cottage located on a main road between the towns of Matlock and Chesterfield and on a great bus route for getting around the Peak District with ease, and a welcoming pub across the road..

Gas central heating, gas, electricity, bed linen, towels and Wi-Fi included. Front garden with courtyard, garden furniture and summerhouse. Private parking for 3 cars. No smoking.. Holly Cottage provides the perfect central location in the Peak District, on the ground floor step into the first reception room with dining table and chairs, there is even space to keep your boots and hang your coat. From here and off to the side is the utility room with washing machine and a downstairs toilet. The kitchen is well-equipped and modern with all the appliances you need to cook a great meal with sitting area by the patio doors which you can open on a nice day and let the outside in. To complete the ground floor is a cosy living room with gas wood burner and a Smart TV.
On the first floor there are three double bedrooms, all with soft and comfortable beds for a restful night’s sleep and all have TV’s too and the master has an en-suite. The master double has the addition of an en-suite shower room too. To complete the first floor is the bathroom made up of shower over bath. Holly Cottage has a beautiful garden, as you step out of the patio doors there is a courtyard area with furniture, then up a couple of steps there is table and chairs plus access to the front of the house, and then a decked area with summerhouse and a bench that catches the afternoon sun, perfect for looking over the countryside hills. To the front of the house is another garden space plus driveway parking for up to 3 cars.
The location of Holly Cottage is fantastic, you are just a few miles outside of Matlock town centre which offers independent and high street shops, cafes and restaurants, as well as good takeaway venues. A short drive from Matlock Bath known for its seaside lookalike features and annual firework displays as well as the stately home of Chatsworth House which is well worth a visit. In the opposite direction is Chesterfield, a market town with its famous crooked spire church. There are so many walking routes surrounding the house as well as a great pub over the road offering home cooked meals throughout the day and night, a favourite with the locals.

Reading some of the previous reviews of this cottage, we were concerned about what we would find. We were pleasantly surprised by the cottage though. It is a lovely place but quite quirky. There are steps to get virtually anywhere in the cottage, both outside and in. This could prove an issue with the less mobile.The bedrooms and beds are all good sizes and beds reasonably comfortable. Storage is mainly drawers, no wardrobes, only a bar, with only 3 hangers in each room which seems too few.The bathroom and en-suite are good, although there was no plug for the bathroom sink when we were there.Getting in to and out of the property with a car is difficult, as has been mentioned before. It is a very busy road at times but visibility is good so patience is needed. Road noise in the cottage was minimal overnight.The Kelstedge Inn opposite is a nice place to eat and drink. Sunday roast recommended. We had a lovely week in Holly cottage and all in all it is a good base to explore this part of the country.

This cottage has been beautifully and thoughtfully renovated and is probably suitable for some people. Sadly it wasn’t what we expected in terms of its position very close to a busy A road with traffic that passed at speed off and on all through the night and was very busy during the day. It wasn’t easy getting our car into and out of the driveway onto such a busy road and space to turn a car on the drive was tight. The outside spaces were very disappointing and it is not right to describe a tiny yard as a rear garden. Accessed only by steep concrete steps it was impossible for my wife to go onto the rear yard and our dog couldn’t be exercised outside and couldn’t manage the steps. There were similar steep steps at the front which led to and from the front door. A small sunken bit of garden at the front was too close to the road to be pleasant to sit in and as our dog is blind, we were worried about him so close to the traffic which was noisy and terrified him. The higher part of the front garden (which had been turned into a small gravel driveway) opened directly onto the road with no gate. We left early in the morning after a sleepless first night in the master bedroom where the bed was incredibly uncomfortable with a foam mattress on a wooden base being much too firm and we got very little sleep between that, the traffic noise and a security light on the neighbouring rear garden which came on at intervals during the night and shone through a gap in the blinds.. We are sad to have to give negative feedback as we can see how hard the owners have tried to create a nice interior but the location and accessibility didn’t work for us and should have been better described as we were very upset to have to abandon a long weekend away to celebrate a special occasion after only one night.

We were dissappinted with our stay at Holly Cottage. The property lacked cleanliness and was poorly equipped. Items in the kitchen were poorly maintained eg fridge freezer draws broken and sharp.There was an over-powering smell of drains in the property as has been noted in previous reviews. This was all reported to cottages.com who failed to take the complaint seriously despite photographs being provided.
