Visited for a week with elderly parents. Was delighted to have found a place that had a downstairs bedroom, bathroom and garden my small dog. However, I can only really asses our stay as 'adequate' and sorry to say that I wouldn't return or recommend, we left a day early. There were issues with cleanliness; damp/mould(?) in the cupboards designated as wardrobes so didn't really want to hang clothes in there; there was quite a bit of dust and lots of cobwebs (floors especially in need of thorough cleaning); some of the bed linen needs renewing as some was a bit grubby. The downstairs bedroom is far too small for a double bed. Although we only had one person in that room a couple would need to decide who climbs over the other to get in/out of the bed. We even kept the blind shut all the time once we'd climbed over to close it. The shower door is so ill-fitting that the entire floor gets soaked. Also, floor mats need some kind of gripper, very slippy on wooden floors. We rolled up the kitchen one and kept it under the table for the duration of our stay. The biggest disappointment was the garden. Although previous guests had commented on the garden not being entirely secure and the response being that it had been rectified, this is not the case. There are still gaps in the hedge at the end of the garden where a small dog can get through and what is behind is like a maintenance area. I used a couple of the outdoor seats to block the gaps. Small bin needed outside for poo bags otherwise having to carry it through the house to the main bin at the front (although I left them in the garden, by the table that serves as a stop gap, and took them to the bin on our last day). The other disappointing aspect to the garden was how ill-kept it was. Overgrown and untidy, even mowing the lawn would make a significant improvement. Overall the whole property inside and out needs a deep clean and some basic maintenance done. One last point: instructions in the property ask for guests to strip the beds before leaving. We did do this (on 2 of the 3 beds used) but this is a task for the owner/manager/housekeeper. Although we left a day early so had some time there isn't time for guests to do this kind of housekeeping and vacate the property by 10am. Emptying bins, washing up, yes no problem, but stripping the beds? Bit of a cheek. The village is beautiful and the location great for exploring Rutland but I noticed several other cottages in the village that were listed as self-catering so would look at those in future.
