A Peaceful Lakeland Escape at Herdwick Croft

Voted one of the UK’s most peaceful staycation destinations, the idyllic village of Bassenthwaite is the spectacular setting for Herdwick Croft. Now under exciting new ownership (Lovat Parks) as of July 2026, we are beginning a new chapter—dedicated to enhancing your guest experience while fiercely protecting the natural magic of this unique location. Here, you will wake up every morning to breathtaking, panoramic views of Skiddaw, Sale Fell, and Binsey.

The Only True Lake in the District We are exceptionally lucky to be discreetly nestled on the northern shores of beautiful Bassenthwaite Lake—famously the only official lake in the Lake District. This makes the park an absolute haven for water lovers. Launch your paddleboard or kayak, brave an invigorating cold-water swim, enjoy a peaceful spot of fishing, or simply sit back on the shoreline and let the mesmerizing water views wash over you.

Exceptional Dining & Neighbours After a day on the fells, unwind at Herdwick Willy’s, our welcoming on-site Bar & Bistro. Open seven days a week, it is the perfect spot for a hearty breakfast, a leisurely lunch, or a delicious evening meal and a well-earned drink.

If you fancy a wander, you are in brilliant company. We are just a short stroll from the award-winning Lakes Distillery (perfect for a whisky tour and tasting), the luxurious Armathwaite Hall & Spa next door, and the Lake District Wildlife Park. In fact, we are so close to the wildlife park that you can often hear the monkeys happily chattering away from the comfort of our grounds!

Explore the Fells, Forests, and Market Towns Herdwick Croft is the ultimate basecamp for Lakeland exploration. Leave the car behind and hop on the local bus right at our park gates to visit the vibrant, independent shops and cafes of Keswick and Cockermouth, just 10 minutes away.

For thrill-seekers, the mountain biking trails and Go Ape courses of Whinlatter Forest Park are only 5 miles away. If you are chasing dramatic scenery, the towering Scale Force waterfall at Crummock Water, the exhilarating walks of the Buttermere Valley, and the remote, rugged beauty of Ennerdale are all within a short, scenic drive.. Excellent lodge. Great facilities and high standard of equipment and furnishings. Price paid was very reasonable considering the high high standard. The lodge includes both a dishwasher and washing machining in the kitchen area and an en suite shower room and walk in wardrobe / dressing room off the main bedroom

We recently stayed here for a short break and, overall, had a lovely holiday. The park itself was pleasant and we would recommend it to others, although there were a few disappointments that prevented it from being a perfect stay. The day before arrival, we received a phone call from reception with helpful information about the park, which was a great touch. However, we were advised that the bar and bistro were open from 10am-10pm, with light bites available between 12pm and 3pm and takeaway food available for lodges afterwards. When we went to the bistro at around 8pm, we were told there was no kitchen service available, meaning we had to find food elsewhere and take it back to the lodge. The lodge itself was comfortable, but there were a few things missing that would have improved the experience. There was no soap in the bathrooms for handwashing and no shower gel or similar toiletries provided. There was also nothing available to wipe down surfaces or benches. The airing cupboard, where coats were expected to be stored, contained a mop that smelled quite stale, so we chose not to use it and instead had to hang coats on the backs of chairs, which made the living area feel a little cluttered for four people. There were also a few smaller issues that didn't significantly affect our holiday but were noticeable. Only four tea bags and four milk portions were provided for four people staying three nights. It would have been nice to have a few more essentials available so guests don't immediately need to go shopping. We also couldn't find any instructions for using the facilities and appliances in the lodge, so we had to work everything out ourselves.None of these issues ruined our holiday, and we still had an enjoyable stay. With a little more attention to the details and clearer communication regarding on-site facilities, this could easily have been a five-star experience. Overall, we'd recommend the park, but there is definitely room for improvement.
