Surrounded by woodland on the slopes of Whinlatter forest the cottage is a perfect ’away from it all’ retreat with the delight of visiting red squirrels. It has the most fantastic summer house (or belvedere) with a deck at the top of its fellside garden, which has chairs, table and lighting. It has superb views across the Derwent marshes and to the distant fells. You can walk or cycle from the doorstep and sail on the lake at Bassenthwaite. There is an art gallery and coffee shop in the village and pubs, restaurants and a shop in the neighbouring village of Braithwaite and an abundance of amenities in nearby Keswick. The accommodation is upside down with the living space upstairs is 27ft long with paintings by local artists and benefits from the views towards Skiddaw and Clough Head. The presentation of the Larches was very poor! On arrival we found a large carpet, above the stairs, half hanging from the wall mount. The toaster did not work and a new had to be collected from the Keswick office. We found mould on the main bedroom wall, the drainage of the bathroom sink and shower unit were blocked, the drainage plungers and dishes were dirty, the fireplace was full of ash, not cleaned, the back twin bed room smelt musty and dump, there was litter etc under the beds, there were cobwebs and spider everywhere, there are too many wires, broken lamps, the TV setup is complicated, the place was generally unclean. We left after four days in the property and received a refund for the unused part of our stay.. Overall a terrible reflection on Cottages.com
