Guests say

Birch Knoll is a well-located cottage in Ambleside, appreciated for its proximity to the town centre and lake. Guests enjoy the scenic views, private garden, and the convenience for walks and local transport. The property is described as comfortable and warm, with a well-equipped kitchen and useful garage storage.

The cottage's cleanliness receives mixed reviews. Some guests found it clean, while others noted issues with dust, spiders, and general upkeep. The inconsistency suggests room for improvement in cleaning standards.

The location is highly praised for its convenience to both Ambleside town centre and the lake, with easy access to local attractions, walks, and transport. The scenic views and proximity to amenities contribute to its high rating.

Guests find the property comfortable overall, with a particularly cosy sitting room. However, some guests mentioned issues with beds and noise from the main road when in the garden, slightly affecting the comfort score.

Facilities are adequate with a well-equipped kitchen and storage garage, but guests consistently mention the lack of Wi-Fi and dishwasher. Parking space limitations and maintenance issues like lighting and TV signal also detract from the experience.

There is insufficient information to score thoughtfulness accurately. While some guests suggested improvements like providing washing up liquid and a welcome pack with tea, coffee, and milk, there are no consistent references to gifts or special touches provided by the host.

About this property

A few minutes’ walk from the centre of Ambleside, this cosy bungalow is the perfect Lake District base for a small family or two couples sharing. Waterhead Pier is on the doorstep, from where Windermere Lake Cruises cross regularly for Bowness and Lakeside, whilst historic Grasmere and the picturesque village of Hawkshead are both within easy reach. For stocking up on groceries, the award-winning Booths supermarket is in nearby Windermere where guests can also browse the many independent shops, restaurants and bars.

Birch Knoll has an especially pretty garden, perfect for enjoying the views or reading the morning papers over coffee or a laze holiday brunch. There is parking for one car, while the garage provides safe storage for bikes and other outdoor equipment. Once inside, guests will appreciate the bright, well-planned space and superbly comfortable furnishings. Recently refurbished, the stylish kitchen is equipped with everything needed to make this a home-from-home. The two bedrooms are tastefully furnished and offer lovely views. A smart bathroom with shower over the bath completes the accommodation.

Ambleside itself is a lively village with two independent cinemas, tearooms, fine restaurants and interesting shops around every corner. Whether guests are planning a holiday filled with energetic outdoor activities or looking for a more laid-back break, this is a wonderful spot in which to spend a special time together.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.

However this might have to be the last time, as in these modern times the lack of WiFi is a real problem.

And the car parking space could do with widening, we struggled to park and unload etc, at one point a car was parked opposite so we could get it in at all. The house itself is lovely, great location and we enjoyed our stay

Very warm and comfortable, well furnished and beautifully decorated. The gardens were beautiful too and very private. The drive is fairly small - we have a Mini, so it wasn't a problem, but anything bigger would struggle! Will definitely return.
