About this property

Hawkshead 1.1 miles. Situated in Outgate, near the village of Hawkshead in Cumbria, lies this grand, four-bedroom property, Orchard Cottage. Completed to an exceptional standard, with state-of-the-art appliances, stylish interiors, sleek bathrooms, and a large private garden, whilst retaining some of the home’s original features and beamed ceilings, dating back to 1603, the cottage welcomes eight guests and two well-behaved dogs, perfect for a countryside retreat. Orchard Cottage is also set amongst a semi-rural setting of land gifted by Beatrix Potter to the National Trust, offering both peace and tranquillity with stunning panoramic fell and country views. The house and gardens have wonderful views across rolling countryside to Latterbarrow, which is a fabulous viewpiont itself and just a mile away and the Windermere valley.

Many enticing country walks start from the doorstep, whilst the high fells are only a short drive away. Enjoy the outside space, offering rolling views across the manicured lawn and shrubs, where you'll find several patio areas with inviting furniture in tow. Head inside to relax in the suntrap conservatory, prepare meals in the contemporary kitchen, dine around the grand table, and unwind in the sitting room, perched in front of the woodburning stove. Heading to the halfway landing, be welcomed by the master super-king-size bedroom with an opulent en-suite, along with the main Victorian-style shower room. On the first floor you'll find the additional bedrooms, one of which also homes an en-suite, whilst the remainder share the beautifully decorated bathroom opposite and the half-landing shower room.

Note: This property can be booked along with Pippins using Ref 1168991 together sleeping up to 12 guests.

The charming community of Hawkshead still possesses the charm and personality that made it so appealing to its most well-known residents, Beatrix Potter, and William Wordsworth. Between the whitewashed 17th century homes, visitors can explore the abundance of little passageways, thoroughfares, archways, and courtyards. In addition to the Beatrix Potter Gallery, which hosts an annual changing display of the renowned author's pictures and stories, the village is home to several charming inns, teashops, guest houses, and gift shops. You may visit the location where the Lakeland poet developed his love of the form and even see the desk into which he wrote his name as a young child by visiting the Old Grammar School, which is still standing today. William Wordsworth is another well-known Hawkshead admirer.

Location was perfect, gorgeous pub at the end of the lane. Easy access to beautiful areas within the Lakes. Beds were very comfortable. A couple of disappointing details, the house was not decorated for Christmas. Utensils in the kitchen were not sufficient. Nowhere to sit and do hair and makeup, no TVs in any of the bedrooms and the conservatory is screaming out for comfy seating.

Only criticism was the kitchen area did smell slightly of dogs.

The perfect place to explore the stunning Lake District. We spent a week for our mini moon and twins’ 3rd birthday. Our two Labradors loved the large garden and we all enjoyed watching dragonflies dancing over the pond. Lovely large comfy beds were exactly what we needed after long days sightseeing. Staying in such a beautiful cottage with breathtaking views has confirmed that we want to find our own family home in the heart if the Lakes. An amazing place to bring up our children, surrounded by nature.
