Hawkshead, formerly beloved by literary greats like William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter, has preserved much of its original character and charm. Between the whitewashed houses from the 17th century lies a maze of narrow streets, passageways, arches, and courtyards that visitors can explore. Together with the Beatrix Potter Gallery, which features a new exhibition of the author's pictures and stories every year, the village also has a number of hospitable inns, tearooms, guesthouses, and gift stores. William Wordsworth, another well-known admirer of Hawkshead, was educated there from 1779 to 1787. The Old Grammar School still survives, and visitors can go inside to see where the Lakeland poet first fell in love with the English language and literature. Located about 10 miles away, Newby Bridge is home to the Aquarium of the Lakes and the daily Windermere Lake Cruises that connect Ambleside, Bowness, and Lakeside. Hawkshead is a great place to visit any time of year, thanks to its proximity to beautiful natural features and a wealth of interesting points of interest.

Lovely lodge, great location, only slight niggle some of the window catches could do with adjustment, and the handles on a couple of the blinds missing, other wise an excellent lodge

  • Paul

    Very clean and comfy.

  • Kim

Ideal for walking to Grizedale or down to the lake. It's about a 15 minute walk to Hawkshead village too, local shops and a few pubs. Will definitely book again.
