Guests say

Acorn Cottage is praised for its superb location in Grasmere, offering privacy and proximity to local attractions. Guests appreciate the comfortable furnishings, cosy atmosphere, and well-equipped kitchen. While some guests have highlighted maintenance issues and the need for a refresh, the charm of the cottage and its setting often outweigh these concerns.

Guests that stayed at this property said

The cottage generally maintains a good standard of cleanliness, though some guests have reported dust and specific instances of uncleanliness. There are mentions of areas needing attention, such as behind furniture and in the bathroom, but these are not consistent across all reviews.

The location is highly praised for its convenience and seclusion, being close to the village centre and starting points for local walks. The setting provides privacy and is considered ideal by the majority of guests.

Guests find the beds comfortable and the living spaces cosy, contributing to a pleasant stay. However, some guests have noted that certain furnishings and aspects of the bathroom could be improved for enhanced comfort.

While the kitchen is well-equipped and the appliances are of good quality, there are several mentions of maintenance issues such as the need for painting, garden furniture repair, and minor repairs inside the cottage. These issues suggest that the facilities could benefit from more regular upkeep.

There are mentions of welcome packs containing tea, coffee, and biscuits, which guests found to be a nice touch. However, as not all reviews reference such gifts and there is no guarantee of their provision, it is not possible to accurately score this category.

About this property

Perched on a rocky ledge, slightly removed from the village centre, Acorn Cottage is a timber-built property with a magical feel. The views are just lovely, and the surrounding woodland makes the perfect backdrop for a fairy tale cottage.

The house is approached by stone steps leading to the front door. Stepping inside guests will be thrilled with their choice of hideaway with its traditional features, wood beams, stable door and feature stone fireplace. The décor is stylish and tasteful, and the furnishings inviting and comfortable. A deep-cushioned sofa and generous armchairs are clustered around the wood burning stove, while a pretty glass panelled door hints at the beauty outside. There is plenty of space for boots and coats in the under stairs area, which in turn takes guests to the two lovely bedrooms. A spacious twin room can be made up as a king if requested in advance, and the very pretty double room is temptingly cosy, with luxury bedding and traditional cottage door. Upstairs is the gorgeous house shower room with reviving walk-in monsoon shower.

The smart kitchen is a delight; modern, bright and very well equipped. Parking for the cottage is on the lane outside and is suitable for a small to medium sized vehicle.

Grasmere is a wonderful location for a holiday in the Lake District. Home to the famous Grasmere Gingerbread, Wordsworth’s Dove Cottage, a churchyard steeped in history and with a fine array of tearooms and restaurants around every corner. The sophisticated village of Ambleside is a short drive away, and there are wonderful walks around Rydall Water, Loughrigg and Easedale Tarn to enjoy.

Situated in the heart of the Lake District National Park is the lovely village of Grasmere, probably best known as the home of William Wordsworth, a place he once described as "The most loveliest spot that man hath found". Any visit to Grasmere needs to include The Grasmere Gingerbread shop, where the Wilson family have been making gingerbread for over 60 years. Also in the village are a number of shops, pubs, a church which dates back to the 13th century and Grasmere Lake, plus Grasmere Sports takes place every August, where you can watch participants compete in a variety of sports, including Cumberland Wrestling. Just five miles away is the town of Ambleside and Lake Winderemere where you will find shops, pubs, restaurants and the 17th century Bridge House, which is one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District. Cruises, boat trips and watersports can all be enjoyed on Lake Windermere and the towns of Windermere and Keswick are also within driving distance. Grasmere is a wonderful base for your Lake District retreat.

Only minor gripe is that the WiFi could be a little quicker. Would definitely come back

Admittedly, one I might not have booked based on previous negative reviews but I booked late so had little choice and went for its location. Am so glad I did - yes the location is perfect close to central Grasmere but on a quiet lane where walkers pass starting their treks. On the doorstep are walks to Easedale Tarn, Helm Crag, circular lake walks and Silver How. But the cottage itself is also so lovely, tastefully and recently decorated, small but perfectly formed kitchen with fancy oven and enviable cutlery draw. Mini welcome packs of tea bags, dishwasher tabs etc provide the basics. Generous lounge with log fire we didn’t need in balmy August. Two lovely bedrooms with sumptuous bedding and heavy curtains and a modern luxury bathroom with lots of hot water. The heating works well (ok it wasn’t that balmy). Highly recommend and will come back if I can! Yes there’s no cheese grater but the co-op sells grated cheese and frankly there’s more in life to worry about! Bring your kitchen basics and an oven tray if you need one, and enjoy this gem!

comfortable furniture and cosy. Clearly was a loved property of the owner at one point, but feels very uncared for now and tired via the holiday rental market. Exterior in need of paint and general maintenance. Front 'garden' area is in need of weeding and general tidying up, lots of weeds and generally neglected. The garden furniture has been cleaned but is unappealing and not somewhere you would want to sit. Needs proper maintenance and care. Basic items missing from house - eg baking tray and cheese grater. Also nowhere to hang coats. Not somewhere we would stay again. Welcome pack from Lakelovers is akin to that of a budget hotel and smacks of tokenism. Would be reluctant to book again via Lakelovers.
