About this property

Set in a wonderful hillside position, this magnificent house offers spacious accommodation throughout, ideal for family and friends. This large Lake District cottage boasts a wonderful sitting room which has a TV and open fire, a superb fitted kitchen with adjoining dining room and the flexibility of eight bedrooms. The large gardens and patio are ideal for sitting out, enjoying the views and watching the wildlife. Windermere, Bowness and Ambleside are a short drive away. Note: This property can be booked with Ref. 2027 to sleep 21 people.

Staveley is situated between Kendal and Windermere and has gained a reputation as the Gateway to the Lakes. It is mainly comprised of picturesque, grey slate buildings, sandwiched between the Rivers Kent and Gowan. This once forested area was grazed as early as 4000BC. Iron Age farmers settled first and were followed by the English and Scandinavians and evidence of these early civilizations can be found throughout the region. The village has an excellent range of amenities including a variety of shops, three pubs, a craft shop and a Railway Station. Nearby, Windermere and Ambleside are better known than Chipping and offer a number of attractions such as boat trips on Lake Windemere and a ferry to the Lakeside Aquarium and Grizedale Forest Park.

2nd time in house and will be 3rd next year. Staveley lovely location for Windermere, Ambleside, Grasmere, langdales etc. Kendal approx 5 miles, great for the big shop, Morrisons, aldi and Lidl. Owners of the house and ghyll bank properties are lovely and friendly. Thank you x

Off the beaten track and therefore amazingly quiet. I would suggest care on the approach road as there are one or two bad potholes. The house is very well equipped, plenty of bed linen and towels provided and has enough bathrooms and showers so no-one ever has to wait their turn! The owners kept in good contact with us which was reassuring and the cleaners had done a very thorough job. I will mention that whilst some of the furnishings are a little dated it in no way detracted from our stay and made us feel rather more at ease with having young children and a dog with us. Whilst at Ghyll Bank House we did have an overnight power cut due to a bad storm. We found a few tea lights and had some logs for a fire but no means of making a hot drink. Perhaps covering this eventuality for the future could be considered? Overall, our family party had a wonderful week's stay and send many thanks to the owners.

The property has an impressive selection of rooms to cater for various group combinations and a large lounge that has a stunning view down the valley to Staveley, complete with fire, TV and a selection of games. There is also an outdoor patio area to enjoy the view and a glass of wine. The house is secluded, with just two smaller rental properties next door. We had a week of fell walking literally from the door. Ghyll Bank is perfect for exploring the lower fells of Kentmere which itself is just a short drive away and where there are bigger fells (or an extremely pleasant fell walk away) and Staveley is perhaps a 30 minute walk away where there is The Eagle and Child pub offering good beer and food.
