Guests say

Shepherd's Cottage is consistently praised for its stunning location, tranquillity, and welcoming hosts. Guests appreciate the beautiful walks, wildlife, and the traditional cottage experience. The lack of Wi-Fi and phone signal is seen as a chance to disconnect and enjoy nature. The property's charm and the surrounding area's beauty make it a favourite for repeat visits.

The majority of reviews describe the cottage as clean, with specific mentions of spotless conditions. However, a few guests noted areas that could benefit from a freshen up, particularly the kitchen and bathroom, which slightly lowers the score.

The location is highly praised for its beauty, peacefulness, and proximity to walking trails and nature. The secluded setting in the middle of a field and near the River Tees is a highlight for many guests, contributing to a high score.

Guests find the cottage comfortable and cosy, with a warm welcome and efficient heating. Some guests mentioned the beds being quite firm and the shower head needing attention, which suggests room for improvement in overall comfort.

The cottage is well-equipped according to guests, but some noted that the property and its amenities could use updating and maintenance. The track leading to the cottage may be challenging for some vehicles, and the lack of information on laundry facilities suggests a need for better communication.

While the reviews reflect the owners' friendliness and helpfulness, there are no specific mentions of gifts or special touches that would fall under the category of thoughtfulness. Therefore, it is not possible to provide a score in this category.

About this property

A wonderful stone-built detached cottage, situated in the middle of a field on the owners' working farm in the small Teesdale hamlet of Holwick. The cottage, which is approached by a farm lane, has been skilfully created from an old stone barn and has upside down accommodation to take advantage of the lovely views. The River Tees runs by the bottom of the field. Comfortably decorated and furnished, this delightful barn offers superb holiday accommodation at any time of the year.

Situated at the end of a no-through-road in the heart of beautiful unspoilt Teesdale is the peaceful, charming hamlet of Holwick. Designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this lovely region is an excellent spot for walkers or bird watchers. High Force waterfall is within walking distance of the hamlet whilst the challenging Pennine Way passes close by. In the village itself there is a pub which serves food, as well as a farm shop and butchers that has an additional cafe area. There are many other picturesque villages nearby however – such as Middleton, Mickleton and Romaldkirk – as well as the ancient market town of Barnard Castle that provide a wide range of amenities. The Lake District is less than an hour's drive away whilst all of the Northern Dales are within easy reach.

A barbecue would be good in the garden

As others have mentioned it would be nice to know where the washing machine was if needed but we had packed for the week so not a problem. BBQ was not there so don’t plan on one which we had thought of doing but once again not a big issue. Track down to cottage was fine for us in a 4x4 but others need to be aware. No idea of recycling maybe let people know about it but overall a great place to unwind with nature all around .

Shower is fun! No info pack so wasn't sure what to do with bins, didn't know where the washing machine was. Very peaceful, our car coped fine with track leading to the cottage.
