Guests say

Shepherd's Cottage is highly praised for its tranquil and picturesque setting, offering a cosy and comfortable retreat with stunning views and abundant wildlife. Guests appreciate the warm welcome from the hosts and the cottage's proximity to walking trails. The absence of Wi-Fi is noted as a bonus for a peaceful escape, though some guests missed this amenity.

The majority of guests found the cottage to be clean and well-kept, with spotless bedding and a welcoming atmosphere. A few guests noted areas that could benefit from additional attention, but these comments were not the norm.

The location is consistently lauded for its beauty and tranquillity, with easy access to walking trails and the River Tees. The remote setting in a wildflower meadow surrounded by sheep is a highlight for many.

Guests describe the cottage as cosy, warm, and comfortable, with a homely feel. The beds are comfortable, and the living space is well-regarded, although one review mentioned the firmness of the bed as a subjective preference.

Facilities are generally appreciated, especially the well-equipped kitchen. However, some guests expressed a desire for updates and improvements, and the small fridge size was noted. The track to the cottage is mentioned as challenging for low vehicles.

While guests mention the kindness and responsiveness of the owners, there is insufficient information regarding specific thoughtful gestures or gifts to accurately score this category. Therefore, the score is set to null.

About this property

A wonderful stone-built detached cottage, situated in the middle of a field on the owners' working farm in the small Teesdale hamlet of Holwick. The cottage, which is approached by a farm lane, has been skilfully created from an old stone barn and has upside down accommodation to take advantage of the lovely views. The River Tees runs by the bottom of the field. Comfortably decorated and furnished, this delightful barn offers superb holiday accommodation at any time of the year.

Situated at the end of a no-through-road in the heart of beautiful unspoilt Teesdale is the peaceful, charming hamlet of Holwick. Designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this lovely region is an excellent spot for walkers or bird watchers. High Force waterfall is within walking distance of the hamlet whilst the challenging Pennine Way passes close by. In the village itself there is a pub which serves food, as well as a farm shop and butchers that has an additional cafe area. There are many other picturesque villages nearby however – such as Middleton, Mickleton and Romaldkirk – as well as the ancient market town of Barnard Castle that provide a wide range of amenities. The Lake District is less than an hour's drive away whilst all of the Northern Dales are within easy reach.

Owners very friendly. Lovely views, lovely walks and plenty of places to visit .

The kitchen facilities were suitable to our needs . The gas log burner was very efficient and made the upper room even warmer, too warm at times. At home we have 2 log burners and appreciated the gas one they had no fixing and lighting nor having to buy small packs of wood locally at extortionately high prices. As others have mentioned the lane leading to the cottage is nearly 1/4 of a mile long and small or low sports cars might find this a problem . As we arrived in a large 4x4 it wasn’t a problem The barn conversion sits literally in the middle of a field which we loved The owners were on hand if required Our dog was in his element as he had a big field to run . With no fears of him running onto a main road Comfy bed Choice of tv channels poor free view . Internet reception poor? Both of these you are made aware of when booking . I enjoyed watching Heart Beat and The Saint The light over the bathroom mirror blew but that did not detract from our stay. The owners popped down with a fresh bulb on reporting this Best town for meals out Richmond . 35 mins drive and worth it We will return probably in spring Can’t recommend highly enough. If you want peace and quiet this is the place. The phone didn’t ring once

Very peaceful and gorgeous scenery. The only downside for us was having no WiFi and no phone signal Very friendly owners and very helpful.
