About this property

A Grade II listed townhouse sporting views of the historic St. Paul’s Church, Algernon House is a fantastic Northumberland getaway with easy access to the bustling town centre of Alnwick. You will simply love the unique look of this property as you take in the history and heritage of the local area whilst you unpack. When you need to put your feet up, grab a cup of tea and head over to the tasteful sitting room, where large windows let in seas of natural light, and two red sofas rest beside a welcoming woodburning stove, ideal for warming your feet in the cooler months. Algernon House has a contemporary kitchen/diner, one with plenty of space and amenities for guests to use, sage furniture and a dining table that could also be the centre of a family games night. When sleep calls, you have the option of five beautiful bedrooms, beginning with a spacious king-size with large windows, a TV and views of the tree-lined streets, a double with a coat rack and a single, ideal for a child, and there is also a family bathroom on the same floor. Outside, a sitting area encourages you to dine alfresco, with stone walls creating an eye-catching backdrop for your meal. Alnwick is a fantastic market town with loads of tasty eateries, independent shops and several convenience stores, so why not enjoy a meal out after a day of browsing whats on offer? Alnwick has the amazing Alnwick Castle, Alnwick gardens and Alnwick Abbey Gatehouse, and you can enjoy a riverside walk through Hulne Park. For a seaside day out, visit Alnmouth, where you will find a wonderful sandy beach, ideal for walking, watersports and wild swimming. Make a holiday to remember with a stay at the wonderful Algernon House.

The attractive and historic market town of Alnwick is dominated by Alnwick Castle, home to the Duke of Northumberland. The Castle Gardens, opened in 2002, are home to Europe's largest cascading water feature, a fabulous (and enormous) treehouse, a delightful rose garden and a beautiful, walled ornamental garden, which will delight novice and experienced gardeners alike. The castle is also famous as the setting for Hogwarts School featured in the Harry Potter films! The town's narrow streets have seen little change since the days when the London to Edinburgh stage coach passed through and the Market Place, with its stone cross, is still the central feature and the ideal venue for the weekly Saturday market. Alnwick offers a good selection of shops, pubs and places to eat and there is plenty to see and do, with miles of golden sandy beaches, numerous castles and boat trips to the famous Farne Islands all available nearby. Altogether a superb location for exploring Northumberland and its stunning Heritage Coastline.

The house itself was comfortable and quirky. A few things could be done to improve it further- hooks on the bedroom/bathroom doors for towels, hand soap provided in the bathroom/kitchen and a pint of fresh milk on arrival would have been lovely. We did not use the parking space in the back alley as it was too tight to manoeuvre into and there was no access from the space to the rear of the property- the listing could be updated with this info.

As said very clean and comfortable however they’ve missed providing the small things that are classed as essential in our opinion. There was no hand wash or a small soap bar in the bathroom and only 1 toilet roll (not expecting a 6 pack but at least 1 spare and we buy more if needed) plus no bins in the bedroom. It would be good to highlight that the 2nd double bedroom had no place to put any clothes apart from a few hooks on the wall but I know space is tight in this room. Also that the church bells ring every 15 minutes starting early in the morning at 6am, I wasn’t aware of this and had a poor sleep the first night due to this and had to go buy ear plugs the next day but for those with young children this may not be possible.
