Guests say

Algernon House is a charming cottage in Alnwick, appreciated for its excellent location and comfortable setting. Guests have enjoyed the proximity to local attractions and the unique character of the property. Some minor improvements are suggested to enhance the experience further.

The property is generally clean, but there were concerns about unchanged bed sheets and a grubby dishwasher. Most reviews did not mention cleanliness as an issue, suggesting it is satisfactory overall.

The location is highly praised for being central and close to the village, with beautiful places on the doorstep. The proximity to local attractions is a significant plus.

The property is described as comfortable and quirky, though some guests noted the lack of storage in one bedroom and the disturbance from church bells. Overall, comfort is deemed adequate.

Facilities are generally good, but there are several mentions of maintenance issues such as broken dishwashers and showers. The tight parking space was also a concern for some guests.

While guests suggested improvements like providing hand soap and a pint of milk on arrival, there is no consistent mention of gifts or thoughtful touches being provided or expected, so a score cannot be given.

About this property

A Grade II listed townhouse sporting views of the historic St. Paul’s Church, Algernon House is a fantastic Northumberland getaway with easy access to the bustling town centre of Alnwick. You will simply love the unique look of this property as you take in the history and heritage of the local area whilst you unpack. When you need to put your feet up, grab a cup of tea and head over to the tasteful sitting room, where large windows let in seas of natural light, and two red sofas rest beside a welcoming woodburning stove, ideal for warming your feet in the cooler months. Algernon House has a contemporary kitchen/diner, one with plenty of space and amenities for guests to use, sage furniture and a dining table that could also be the centre of a family games night. When sleep calls, you have the option of five beautiful bedrooms, beginning with a spacious king-size with large windows, a TV and views of the tree-lined streets, a double with a coat rack and a single, ideal for a child, and there is also a family bathroom on the same floor. Outside, a sitting area encourages you to dine alfresco, with stone walls creating an eye-catching backdrop for your meal. Alnwick is a fantastic market town with loads of tasty eateries, independent shops and several convenience stores, so why not enjoy a meal out after a day of browsing whats on offer? Alnwick has the amazing Alnwick Castle, Alnwick gardens and Alnwick Abbey Gatehouse, and you can enjoy a riverside walk through Hulne Park. For a seaside day out, visit Alnmouth, where you will find a wonderful sandy beach, ideal for walking, watersports and wild swimming. Make a holiday to remember with a stay at the wonderful Algernon House.

The attractive and historic market town of Alnwick is dominated by Alnwick Castle, home to the Duke of Northumberland. The Castle Gardens, opened in 2002, are home to Europe's largest cascading water feature, a fabulous (and enormous) treehouse, a delightful rose garden and a beautiful, walled ornamental garden, which will delight novice and experienced gardeners alike. The castle is also famous as the setting for Hogwarts School featured in the Harry Potter films! The town's narrow streets have seen little change since the days when the London to Edinburgh stage coach passed through and the Market Place, with its stone cross, is still the central feature and the ideal venue for the weekly Saturday market. Alnwick offers a good selection of shops, pubs and places to eat and there is plenty to see and do, with miles of golden sandy beaches, numerous castles and boat trips to the famous Farne Islands all available nearby. Altogether a superb location for exploring Northumberland and its stunning Heritage Coastline.

Floors not swept/hoovered and we needed to wash kitchen equipment before we used it. Kitchen was really poorly equipped with small pans etc. Extremely poor welcome pack - catering sachets of milk, couple of teabags and catering biscuits. Probably the worst we’ve ever experienced. We paid over £800 for the week, milk in the fridge and maybe a nice loaf would have been a bit more thoughtful and personalised. Having said that we had a wonderful stay, and this wouldn’t put us off staying for a 3rd time.

    1. The sheets on one of the beds had not been changed from the previous occupant - not pleasant. 2. Dishwasher was grubby with broken glass in the base. 3. Two of the 3 saucepans were stained and marked and really not up to standard, so much so we decided to eat out rather than cook in. 4. The switch on the shower to change from fixed to handheld was broken so we could only use the fixed shower. 5. We had to take our rubbish home with us as the dustbin was packed full from previous occupants - again not pleasant.

Only negative comments were that the car park space was too tight to use when another car was in the adjoining space and the church bells opposite which rang every 15 minutes from 6.15am!
