Big Cottages & Group Accommodation in Alnwick

In the 'so-North-you're-basically-in-Scotland' plains of Northumberland, we have picturesque Alnwick; home to castles and tattie-scones (that's potato scones to you and I), and beautiful stretches of lush green countryside.

Harry Potter fan? This is the place for you. Top tourist attraction Alnwick Castle has been roping in visitors for decades after having starred as the one and only Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the popular film franchise. Lesser known but just as important to those of who appreciate an afternoon touring a castle, it also featured in Downton Abbey and is highly regarded as one of the UK's finest castles, complete with behind the scene tours, stunning interior design and a selection of fine-dining options. Alnwick offers itself up as a northern Mecca for old world architecture and lavish gardens, but don't keep your feet on the ground - the Tree-House restaurant, a high-rise, fairy-lit dining experience, will surely be the cherry on the cake.

What our customers say about their holidays

  • Dan - Verified booking

On first thoughts this cottage was clean and tidy and looks very comfortable.

I had messaged the owners for some information and they very quick to get back to me. I am sure they are lovely people. However, being woken up every morning as early as 5am by Cockerels was not pleasant! They were then being let out at about 7ish as my son would be woken up between 7-730 with one shouting at his window. The main bed was like a concrete pad with cracks in the frame, so everytime you moved it would make a noise. Also, the boil sounded like a train in the night behind the bedroom wall. If you didn't leave the boiler on, very little hot water in the morning! There generally wasn't enough hot water for 4 people to shower in the morning or night anyway. It was my fault for not reading. However, there is no washing machine at this cottage. So for us as a family of 4 and a dog for 7 nights was not practical. We have stayed in lots of cottages and this is the first one without a washing machine. The rest of the kitchen is fairly well equipped. We are from North Yorkshire and also have our own chickens and spend alot of time in the moors, so we are very much suited to country life. We are aware of current problems with wild rabbits with myxomatosis, we saw a couple while there. There was also a few dead rabbits rotting away within a few meters of the cottage. So had to be careful with the dog. (Need to be moved really) Also, not from the dead rabbits, but the first few days there was a smell of death hanging around which is very unpleasant. With all this said, we checked out 2 days early as we were all very tired from lack of sleep. For a family this cottage would be ok for a weekend, but that is it.

It was easy to get keys and leave keys via key lock.

It was quiet with no noise from neighbours through wall and not much in garden. There was a small well equipped galley kitchen. The dining area has a large table which makes it a bit cramped unless move furniture around. The two leather sofas were a bit soft for our tastes. Gas central heating but not used since went in height of summer. Two electric showers but we only used the one over the bath which was very good. Bathroom light not working and reported at end of stay in book. There was a children's play ground around corner within 1 minute walking and an open grass area called a community orchard (behind or west of Arkle Court) – accessed via a footpath at top right hand branch of Arkle Court. Shopping easy; M&S and Sainsbury within 1-2 minute drive in the direction of the access to A1; Co-op and fish & chip shop in direction of Alnwick town centre. Walk to Barter Books and town centre in 15-20 minutes. Easy access to coast with lots of possibilities and quiet in July. Can recommend Craster or Dunstan Sands for walk to Dunstanburgh Castle. Beadnell has hire of water sports equipment, and beach walk from Amble to Low Hauxley/ Druridge beach.

6 of us( 3 couples) had a fabulous week in this cottage in Alnwick.

What a lovely Georgian building, centrally placed in this pretty town. The cottage had everything we needed and was very well- equipped....plenty of seating, very comfortable beds , plenty of storage space and cupboards and a lovely little garden at the back to sit out and enjoy the sun. Spread over a few floors, there was plenty of room for all of us...and we were most impressed by the large TV's in the reception rooms and bedrooms. The place was immaculately clean . Being in such an excellent location, we were able to stroll into town, walk to the castle, walk to Barter Books ( amazing place ) . We had a few trips to the coast with its stunning beaches and castles. Lindisfarne was well worth a visit. Excellent eating places are within walking distance ( best to book beforehand ). The pub over the road is excellent...also an Italian restaurant " Cafe Tirrano " and " The Dirty Bottles ". Had delicious fish and chips too ...from a nearby shop. All in all, we had a fabulous time and the cottage could not have been more perfect.

This house is an absolutely gorgeous space and was perfect for our family gathering. The location is amazing, the castle and gardens are easily walkable as well as local shops. The living areas are spacious and comfortable, and the decor throughout is immaculate. The house is well equipped and the owner was very responsive and helpful when we had questions. The beds were really comfortable, and the multiple bathrooms makes life easy. Two little issues - The WiFi works brilliantly on the ground floor but gets progressively intermittent as you go up the house. Some Wi-Fi extenders would be helpful. The local 4G works fine though, if you have plenty of data! The childrens bedroom (bunk bed room) bizarrely has a Yale lock on the inside which puts them at risk of locking themselves in - we kept it on the latch but then the door didn’t stay closed. Neither of these issues impacted our stay too much but worth being aware of. We had a great week here and would definitely choose to stay again if we visit Alnwick in the future.
