Other beaches worth visiting include Beadnell Bay and Newton Haven beach. The endearing villages of Embleton and Craster are close or if you jump in the car, head to the town of Alnwick which is a great spot for having a browse and stocking up on essentials. Just a few miles away is the stunning Dunstanburgh Castle and if you’ve got a taste for history then check out Alnwick Castle, Preston Tower, Howick Hall and Bamburgh Castle. For a cottage stay in a beautifully presented holiday home close to the beach, make sure you book a break at Ottoline Cottage.

A picturesque village that seems to tumble into the sea, Craster was an important fishing harbour in the 17th century and is still famous for its oak cured kippers which have graced the best breakfast tables for more than 150 years. The village offers a pub serving food, a fish restaurant and Robson's famous fish shop. There is also an excellent children's playground. Nearby are some of Northumberland's finest sandy beaches. Just south of Craster is Howick Hall, which was built in 1782 and has associations with the Grey family, including Earl Grey the great social reformer and tea enthusiast. The gardens at Howick Hall are open to the public during the spring and summer and are especially worth a visit during the rhododendron season. A walk along the coastal footpath to the north of Craster brings you to the dramatic ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle - the largest ruined castle in Northumberland.

Facilities in the cottage were great which we made good use of during our stay cooking meals with a view of the sea. Bed linen and towels of good quality and all clean. A five star place for us and we'll be back again.

The best view all day everyday… the cottage was cosy and had everything we needed. Will definitely be going back!!!

Only a couple of niggles, for some reason there was no hot water the morning we vacated, the freezer needed defrosting , it was so iced up the door would not close. Had to borrow a corkscrew from next door (important utensil especially when on holiday
